The green bin rollout for remaining Canberra suburbs has been brought forward to 1 April.
Green waste bins will continue to pop up around Canberra as part of the rollout for all suburbs across the nation’s capital this year.
The ACT government’s green waste bin pilot program saw more than 40,000 Belconnen, Tuggeranong and Weston Creek residents register for the green bins by the end of November last year, which is approximately 45 per cent of households in those suburbs.
ACT Minister for City Services Chris Steel announced that the green waste bin rollout for remaining Canberra suburbs – which was originally planned for mid-2019 – has been brought forward to April.
The bins will offset some of the 5,000 tonnes of garden waste that pours into landfill each year and save Canberrans from travelling to the tip to dispose of their green waste, such as lawn clippings, leaves and branches.
Mr Steel said bins will be delivered in March in time for collection services to commence from 1 April.
“The green waste bin service saves Canberrans time and money, providing high-quality compost products for landscaping and reducing the number of trips needed to the green waste drop-off,” Mr Steel said.
“The ACT Government has been working closely with the contractors to move the roll-out forward, responding to strong community demand for the service and ensuring delivery of a key election commitment.
“The Liberals continue to attack our green bin program – but we will continue to roll out better services that are expected by our community and work to reduce the amount of organic waste going into landfill.”
Residents can now register for the service with a one-off payment of $50, or free for eligible concession card holders.
Mr Steel said the existing collection dates for the green bins will likely be changed once services start across the whole of the ACT, with more information on changes to be provided in the coming months.
