Greens declare victory on the Calwell Park and Ride front.

The Greens’ Caroline Le Couteur is savouring triumph in the Greens long struggle for a Park’n’Ride at Calwell shops:

“A Park’n’Ride in Calwell, along with a new REDEX-style direct service to the Parliamentary Triangle and Civic, would give families more transport options and boost the local economy and community.

“A Calwell Park and Ride would service a number of suburbs in the surrounding area, and be ideally located for people travelling to Canberra from regional New South Wales.

The Minister’s announcement confirming the facility comes a week after he announced the trial of 40km/h speed zones around selected shopping centres.

“The 40km/h speed zones around shopping centres is the fulfilment of a Greens/ALP Parliamentary Agreement item.

“We’re seeing a number of Greens initiatives having a positive difference on the ground, making transport safer and more accessible to more Canberrans,” Ms Le Couteur said.

They need one of these in Weston Creek if they want more commuters from there to catch the bus.
I say turn the carpark at the (unused) Weston oval into the Park and Ride carpark, and use the bus stop adjacent (on Hilder St) to bus DIRECTLY to Civic (using the parkway). No more of this: “Go to Woden, then to Civic” crap that takes ages (cf. to driving).
They’d only need 2 or 3 buses in the morning and arvo that are direct to/from Civic. Surely at least a trial (or survey of WC residents?) would be a good idea?

But there already is a Park n Ride in Calwell, its been there for years. It’s even marked as such on the Action timetables.

How can they claim credit for something that ALREADY EXISTS!!!

I can’t wait for the next announcement boasting about how quickly they were able to ‘build’ the facility.

How close is the Park’n’Ride to the supermarket?

Any chance people coming home from work will end up buying their bread and milk from Calwell, on the way from the bus to the car, instead of Civic?

This is the part I don’t get. How will a park ‘n’ ride car park “boost the local economy and community”?
Lets call it what it is – a place to dump your car to avoid paying for parking in the city.
