UPDATED, 3 pm: Police say they currently have no motive behind a shooting in southern Canberra that left a man with a gunshot wound to his leg.
The victim, who was taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries after being shot at his home in Banks on Tuesday (8 July), was not known to police.
On Wednesday (9 July), Detective Acting Superintendent Stephanie Leonard said the investigation was in its early stages, but police had allocated significant resources to the matter.
She said it was too early to say if the incident was linked to any other shootings in Canberra, but nothing was being ruled out yet.
“There is, at this stage, no clear motive for the incident as the victim was not known to police,” she said.
“Hopefully with the progress of the investigation, the motive will become clear.”
Detective Leonard said police had not been able to speak to the victim yet due to the nature of his injuries, but were hoping to do so soon.
“We have a very dedicated criminal investigations team who will work tirelessly on this matter to determine who the offenders are and, where appropriate, put them before the courts,” she said.
She urged anyone with information to contact police.
EARLIER, Wednesday: Police say two gun-wielding intruders confronted a man inside his southern Canberra home before shooting him in the leg.
They have now launched a public appeal for information about the incident.
The man and a woman were woken by the sound of a loud bang at their home in Reader Court, Banks about midnight on Tuesday (8 July), an ACT Policing spokesperson said.
He was then confronted inside his home by two tall balaclava-clad, gun-wielding men.
The pair assaulted him before one of them shot him in the leg.
They ran from the scene and sped away in a dark blue BMW SUV, police say.
“Police and emergency services attended the scene and the injured man was taken to hospital with non life-threatening injuries,” the police spokesperson said.
“ACT Policing is seeking any information relating to the incident or witnesses who have not yet spoken to police.”
