Does anyone know where I could get a pumpkin suitable for carving at this time of year (for Halloween)? I know it is Spring, but I am an American and having a Halloween party.
Please no comments on how much you hate imported Yank stuff! 🙂

Choku Bai Jo has a few that we are selling at $4/kg (thats what they cost us at the wholesale markets) if you would like one please let us know.
I personally think they are too expensive, but if you really want one we can get it for you.
G’day
Choku bai jo North Lyneham is getting some in for someone already, if you want us to order some for you please lets us know on or before Saturday the 23rd Oct. I will post the price per kilo on Thursday when I can check with suppliers.

@GBT – they don’t mess around when it comes to Halloween in the US. I remember hearing a year or so ago that apparently it beats out both Valentine’s Day (also very big there) and even Christmas on candy sales. No surprise as I used to come home with bags full of candy when I was young.
Anyone happening to look for supplies, they have things at Home Base in Woden (as noted above) and also at Aldi this week.
Homebase at Woden Plaza has some plastic ones in the window at the moment.
The trick is to paint 2 big eyes on your bum and park it, very still, amongst other carved pumpkins.
I was just in the US and it amazed me how much they really go all out for Halloween. Practically every store had decorations/sold Halloween stuff. I just wish I had been able to stay for the actual day/night.
Thanks guys. I will check those places out this weekend and provide a report!
For a couple of years Woolies and Coles had tall carving pumpkins for sale around this time of year, though they were expensive. Didn’t see any last year, though.
You could always use milk bottles. We’ve had good success with other fruit – large grapfuit are easy to carve with a craft knife, hold a tea light, and a row of them with different faces looks really good, while watermelons are great for larger lanterns.
There used to be someone at the Bus Depot Markets who sold them around this time of year. You can always contact the ladies that run the markets to see if they’ll have a stall over the next few weeks.
I’ve also seen them in some supermarkets at some ghoulish prices in recent years (probably closer to the end of the month). My recommendation would be to try those supermarkets where the diplomats of town frequent – e.g.: Manuka Coles, Deakin/Yarralumla IGAs, etc.
The foamie pretendy ones are available at times from some shop in the belco mall. Helpful I know but its been a while since i have set foot in the place.
Belco / fyshwick markets. Speak to the Vendors and they should have all sorts to sort you out.
i hate this imported yank stuff. 😉
try choku baijo in north lyneham – they may have a pumpkin supplier with stocks for your carving needs.
