Hanson has no place calling Hastie a traitor

Pauline Hanson might be a divisive figure in Australian politics, but she succeeded in uniting Federal Parliament against her this week over her extraordinary attacks on Liberal frontbencher Andrew Hastie.

One Nation wants his federal seat of Canning in Western Australia and the fight is becoming increasingly personal.

But the gripe party’s leader has, for many, crossed a clear line in depicting the SAS veteran as a traitor.

Senator Hanson point-blank refused to take down a satirical Please Explain online cartoon that calls Mr Hastie a traitor no less than eight times.

The outrage is palpable.

She called him what?

It all stems from Hastie having given evidence against Ben Roberts-Smith in his failed defamation case.

Roberts-Smith has since been charged with war crimes, but he has the support of billionaire Gina Rinehart, who is also a Hanson backer.

Hastie is pretty good at standing up for himself, and he immediately called both Hanson and her lieutenant Barnaby Joyce “lying cowards” over the slur.

“I won’t stand by while my name is slandered by One Nation, or my family’s name is slandered, while veterans who are struggling with moral trauma and thousands of other ADF service members are also slandered by connection with this,” he said.

Barnaby distanced himself from the cartoon, saying he had respect for Hastie and his military service and would never call him a coward.

But Hastie is not letting it go.

“Pauline Hanson and Barnaby Joyce are trashing my service record; they called me a traitor to my own country,” he said.

“But it’s not just about me; it’s about other veterans. Are they saying the same thing of the other 26 combat veterans who gave evidence under oath in the federal court? Are they also traitors to their country?

“I’m calling on Pauline Hanson and Barnaby Joyce to own this cartoon.

“Step into the house or outside the house, I don’t really care, use parliamentary privilege or don’t, explain why I and other veterans and indeed serving members of the ADF who think war crimes are wrong are traitors to their country.”

One Nation’s leader in WA, Rod Caddies, has also distanced himself from the cartoon, saying he didn’t think it was funny and he wouldn’t call Hastie a traitor – and besides, “I hardly speak to Pauline” anyway.

It is in the Federal Parliament, however, where Hanson has received a basting for her treatment of Hastie.

Opposition Leader Angus Taylor called on Hanson to remove the offensive cartoon video.

“Andrew Hastie has served this country with distinction as an officer in the SAS,” he said.

“She should take it down.”

Nationals leader Matt Canavan described Hanson’s description of Hastie as “contemptible”.

“It was the lowest of low political acts, particularly from people who haven’t served themselves or haven’t faced action themselves,” Senator Canavan said.

“This is a matter now for One Nation. The ball is in their court. I don’t think it’s decent and honourable to post content like that.

“I think the decent and honourable thing now, particularly given Andrew’s legitimate response, is to take that video down.”

Shadow defence minister James Paterson described Hastie as a “patriot”, adding there was “no graver insult” for a veteran to be called a traitor.

“Andrew Hastie is not a traitor, he’s a patriot,” Senator Paterson said on Thursday (10 September).

And Labor agrees. Energy Minister Chris Bowen shared his views on the issue.

“He served his country in a war zone,” the minister said.

“That should be honoured, and not pilloried.”

Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister Richard Marles said on Friday morning: “Andrew Hastie is most definitely not a traitor. I know Andrew well, and I’ve said this publicly before, I very much must honour the service that Andrew Hastie has given to our country wearing our nation’s uniform. And I think to use that word in respect of a veteran is extremely tasteless.”

The fiercest attack, however, came from independent Tasmanian senator Jacqui Lambie, herself a veteran.

She called Hanson an “angry little woman”, a “bloody coward” and a “maggot” for calling Hastie a traitor.

“What she’s doing in those cartoons is absolutely disgusting. They are full of bloody violence,” Lambie said.

“But attacking Andrew Hastie, a veteran who has served in our Afghanistan war, or any other veteran, is the lowest ebb you can possibly do. That woman is nothing less than a bloody coward.

“I tell you what, you’re seeing her true colours start to shine now. You watch this, the Australian people. Here comes coward Hanson.

“And any veteran out there thinking about voting for One Nation or standing for them, I tell you what, you had better think twice.”

The Returned Services League of Australia has also expressed disgust at Hanson’s actions, issuing a statement to say the One Nation leader’s insult was a slur on every veteran’s service.

“The recent comments from Senator Hanson towards Andrew Hastie MP go beyond political disagreement,” the RSL said.

“This may have begun as a political dispute between Senator Hanson and Mr Hastie; however, when a person’s military service is used as the punchline, when the word ‘traitor’ is thrown at someone who has worn the uniform and deployed on operations, that stops being politics and starts being an attack on every veteran’s service.”

Hanson’s gutter move might have actually done Hastie a favour in one regard, if it serves to build public sentiment towards him and shore up his support in Canning enough to ward off One Nation at the next federal election.

One can only hope.

Anyone who voted for the hate speech laws in January is, by definition, a coward and a traitor.

Sorry mate, democracy doesn’t work like that. Elected representatives who vote for something you personally don’t agree with are neither cowards nor traitors, they are doing what they’ve been elected to do. If you don’t like that, too bad so sad. And by the way, considering those who have bought for their country, you should pause and think a little before flinging around accusations like “traitor”. Just a thought.

There are many autobiographies and accounts detailing the capture and swift execution of Japanese soldiers by Australian soldiers in PNG during WW2. Those executions were known and accepted by the military and post war public as justifiable responses to Japanese war crimes and atrocities, of which there were many, including cannibalism of Australian corpses. Those who think BRS committed a war crime, or dishonoured the ANZAC tradition, or should be stripped of his VC need to heed the brutalities and history of warfare. Be careful where this may lead. The general Australian public, who are not revisionist academics with their own reputation making agenda or blinkered lefties, do not want an enquiry into historic, now deemed ‘war crimes’ commited by their own veteran fathers, grandfathers and great grandfathers in previous wars. Lest we forget.

An ex-Defence Minister had to cough up tens of thousands a few years back for calling someone a “lying cow”.

Is calling two people “lying cowards” more than twice as bad ?

Yes Penfold the minister at the time was Linda Reynolds who was forced to apologise after making the comment as a response to an alleged rape in her office, which was subsequently found in a court of law to have occurred.

In your round-a-bout and excruciatingly unpleasant commentary on this site are you excusing the comment or just trying to be funny?

Its always funny when Pengold gets skewered on a thread then attempts to create a new one with his talking points because he’s disgraced himself elsewhere.

If One Nation really does want to end up as part of a government after the next election they need to do two things – at least maintain their current first preference vote and persuade more of their voters and Liberal voters to push Labor further down in the preference ranking.

It is very difficult to see how this video serves either of those purposes – if anything, it could be quite counter-productive on the second point by reinforcing the view in the minds of (the remaining) Liberal voters that One Nation is beyond the pale.

The real point of the full 9 minute video, not just the very brief excerpts shown in TV news reports of this story, is fairly obviously that Hastie is not a true conservative (and in that sense a traitor to the cause) and, like the other Liberal front benchers it parodies, just another careerist – or “just another Liberal”, as Labor would say.

The use of the word traitor, rather than something not quite so viscerally provocative such as sell-out or phony, may reflect the extent to which the Roberts-Smith case is distractingly totemic within One Nation, or it may be an attempt at a “rope a dope” strategy – or a bit of both.

Whatever the truth of the matter, this effort will most likely be filed under the “seemed like a good idea at the time” heading.

Pauline’s next play will be to deride the Navy for having saved/rescued boat people, past, present and into the future. A la Farage versus the RNLI in the UK.
Both Farage and Hanson are gutter dwellers.
Anyone who puts a uniform, whether military, nurses or first responders, deserve our respect and support. None of those jobs are easy and the split second decisions made are made by humans and there isn’t a single person on this planet is perfect.

MRP polling by DemosAU in July shows an election held today could result in 60 One Nation lower house seats, not far behind Labor on 68 (a majority is 76). Polling for the seat of Canning (Hastie) shows a primary vote of 40% for One Nation, well ahead of the LNP on 23%, and the 2PP result could be 60% for One Nation, well ahead of Labor on 40%. The poll also shows the likelihood of who would win Canning, with One Nation at 94% likely and the LNP at 6%. Hastie would likely loose Canning if an election were held today, so he needs to fight loud and hard to reverse these polls.

You remember the polling prior to the last election. It showed either a Labor loss or a hung parliament. 🤣 Whoops – when they romped home with 94 seats in the House of Reps. You’re right in one respect though; Andrew Hastie will have a fight on his hands with the richest woman in Australia (thanks Daddy Lang) running a spiteful smear campaign, all about her own personal power.

Jacqui got this one right. Maggot is a label that should stick to Pauline.

This issue seems to have a lot of people hot under the collar. But watching Lambie shriek about an “angry little woman” was quite something to behold.

Speak plainly Penfold.

Do you believe the cartoon is appropriate?

Do you hold Australian servicemen and women in contempt from the ivory tower that you reside in like Pauline appears to? Actually whether she does or not is irrelevant she has still stooped to the level of using it for political mileage.

Your opinion may well have more value had you ever worn the uniform and served or otherwise contributed to this country.

You can work it out Bernie but I haven’t seen the cartoon and have been donating monthly to Soldier On for over a decade. How about you ?

All things considered “Pennie” I would want to see receipts before taking you at your word given your regularly demonstrated willingness to obfuscate and shill for the far right.

Defence was one of several portfolios I worked for in government over the years so I’d hazard a guess the value I contributed would have topped your $10 a month for 10 years inside the first week I was there.

But, as this isn’t an organ measuring contest, I will just say that both Pauline’s attitude, and yours, towards people who actually had the guts to put on the uniform and stand in the line of fire but had the temerity to disagree with your “principles” – speaks poorly of you both, particularly given neither of you were brave enough to have done the same.

Well done on the 10 bucks a month though.

Lol Bernie, several swings and misses there. But nice to hear you’ve done time in the APS levels of the most bureaucratic department in the country. And the acknowledgement that despite your comments, you’ve never served.

Fair smack of hypocrisy there 🤣

Bernard skewers Penfold for his slimy ideological position to excuse any type of behaviour from those on his “side”.

Its not a good look, but we all know he won’t change.

Having served on the front lines personally is irrelevant to having and showing respect for people who have Penny.

I never said I had served, just that you and Pauline were disrespectful to people who had when you didn’t have the guts to do it yourself. Show me where I said otherwise.

So, swings and misses… I said you obfuscate and shill for the right – ✅you do. See your first comment in this thread as a, comparatively, mild example.

I said you donate $10 a month. Sorry. Let’s say $20. ❌ Mea culpa.

I said that the attitude Pauline and yourself display towards people who actually had the guts to stand up in the line of fire when neither of you have spoke poorly of you. ✅ It does. Very poorly, though I encourage others to let me know if my views on that are incorrect and how.

So, other than the $20 what did I miss exactly?

Bernard you will soon realise Penfold is Capital Region’s finest entertainment.

I’m hoping he does the Canberra Comedy Festival 😂😂

Bernie it’s hard to work out what your issue is. Lambie isn’t known as the “crazy cat lady” for nothing and the original comment was having a go at her. Personally i’ve got nothing but complete respect for those who serve and the struggles they face afterwards, hence the thousands (if not more like tens) that has gone to support them via Soldier On. How you assumed otherwise is something only you can explain.

In all the excitement you probably missed that the substance of Hanson’s attacks goes back to officer Hastie’s testimony against and contempt for BRS. Who knows where the bad blood come from but perhaps you could advise us which former Army member’s side you’re on Bernie.

Gregg Heldon4:09 pm 11 Sep 26

Chewy, I’m starting to think that Penfold and Hanson are related. And, if he isn’t, he’d like to be.

Just like with politics “Pennie”. I’m not on anyone’s side.

Very pleased to hear you actually do respect people who have fought for the country we live in. Hope you will continue to support them. Loudly and clearly in future would seem appropriate.

Where Hanson’s attacks originate from is irrelevant and she proves again how unprepared she is to lead a keg party let alone a country. In the military being called a traitor has implications she is too foolish to grasp.

You would know better than most Penfold that I don’t regularly stand up for a liberal (or Labor, greens etc) politician but Hanson has pushed past the disgust threshold in the way she is treating someone entitled to the respect their service earnt them.

Perhaps for once you could speak out against her party line on this?

How about you then Gregg, are you aligning yourself with Hastie or Ben Roberts-Smith here ?

And remember that the lived experience in Afghanistan for both was probably something quite traumatic so perhaps some sympathy or lenience should also apply. Let’s also add that the contents of the Brereton Report remain sealed, though i’m aware of some of the substance of what’s in it. None of it pretty. If you’re looking for real villians though, start with the ones with stars. The battle of Waterloo comes to mind.

“How about you then Gregg, are you aligning yourself with Hastie or Ben Roberts-Smith here ?”

Pengold thinks this is some sort of binary choice between two people, when the reality is everyone should be on the side of the rule of law, where Hastie has done nothing but his duty.

Pengold can’t even take himself out of the gutter for a minute to recognise how disgraceful Hanson’s behaviour has been.

But of course, ideology Trumps all for Pengold.

Thanks Bernard. As for “loudly and clearly” would it be okay with you if i continue the “quietly and respectfully” approach ?

Re Hanson, i’ve never voted for her but am very optimistic that One Nation’s new influence on Australian voters means some of the common sense stuff – reducing immigration, ditching net zero and reducing government spending – means the quiet Australian is back. Albo is cactus.

Hastie have stars we don’t know about Pennie?

Your alleged insider knowledge of the Brereton report, does it identify criminal offences supposedly committed by Hastie?

Was the battle of Waterloo relevant in any way to Hastie, his service and whether or not he is a traitor as alleged by your…. God?

What are you on about man?

Take a step further back into the corner you are talking yourself into and think about what you want to say, what it’s relevance is to the topic at hand and, most importantly, whether the point you think you are making is actually of any value

This meaningless word salad you have come up with to defend a politician not worth defending is sad.

Just another thought about where this has come from Bernard – do you wonder what the rules of engagement were ? If someone is one minute a Taliban fighter with a gun, then the next minute an innocent farmer without a gun, what should the soldiers do ? Follow what they’ve been trained to do and apply risk management principles to reduce threats ? Or break out the Vegemite ?

Wasn’t referring to Hastie Bernie, there’s some dots there to join but much like the bridge at Arnhem they were a little too far clearly. Oh well.

“Wasn’t referring to Hastie Bernie, there’s some dots there to join but much like the bridge at Arnhem they were a little too far clearly. Oh well.”

Pennie. This entire article and discussion were about Hastie and Pauline’s disgraceful treatment of him, If you are dribbling about something else then you weren’t engaging in the discussion in good faith.

Take the weekend off, maybe give Pauline and Barnaby a call for your next discussion point, and come back Monday as an actual worthy debater using facts and evidence rather than trying to make up stories that suit your… unusual worldview.

Humblest apologies Bernie, it seems like discussing some of the issues which have caused the divide between Hanson and Hastie are strictly out-of-bounds in your narrative. Others might call it backgrounding, but let’s not go there.

Thanks for the weekend advice but if you’re offering a weekend at Bernies can’t say it sounds particularly appealing.

Gregg Heldon9:50 am 12 Sep 26

As Chewy stated, Penfold, it’s not a binary choice. Both men went through hell in Afghanistan, and have no doubt, come out with a great deal of trauma attached.
As a person with lived experience of a lot of trauma, I find it risable that you tell me to look at it sympathetically. That’s the last thing that they want. Sympathy can be quite condescending. They would more like want empathy. I know this from my lived experience with trauma. They probably have C-PTSD (like I do) and possibly MDD (like I do too). Mine wasn’t through combat though. Mine was through almost 3 years of looking at Child Sexual Abuse videos and images (and the amount that I saw) whilst employed by the AFP. I was medically retired 6 years ago but I’ll bet that, just like them, they’ll still have images of what they saw on a Rolodex in their heads too.

“Thanks for the weekend advice but if you’re offering a weekend at Bernies can’t say it sounds particularly appealing.”

Credit where it is due Pennie. That was actually a very funny comment.

An actual funny “haha” rather than a funny “cringe”, seems there is hope for you yet.

“…it seems like discussing some of the issues which have caused the divide between Hanson and Hastie are strictly out-of-bounds in your narrative.”

You mean like the battle of Waterloo? Come on mate, read what you write before you post it.

Bernie if you go back and read the post to Gregg you might – if you go really slowly – be able to work out the relevance of the Battle of Waterloo. But there’s a few moving parts to it so you’ll have to think somewhat broadly.

That’s not going to happen any more than you intend to provide a substantive (or even any) answer to any of the questions I posed to you (you can identify them by the question marks ftr)..

The difference though, is Waterloo, and everything else you have spouted is utterly irrelevant to the discussion from the first comment you made until the last.

Here, is the article title “Hanson has no place calling Hastie a traitor”. There is nothing about Wellington or the evil Frenchies, nothing about rules of engagement, the use of cannon or sword, the Taliban or literally anything else you dragged out.

Show us that occasionally revealed spark of intelligence and humour you hide away and answer one question for me, just one.

Do you (you being Penfold not the Duke of Wellington, not BRS, not Gina Rinehart, not the delightful Pauline or Albo) believe calling Andrew Hastie (the former SAS captain in the Australian defence force and current liberal Minister not Napoleon Bonaparte II or III, not Queen Isabella of Castile or her husband) was deserved, in any commonly accepted (so any legal way) way to be called a traitor by Pauline Hanson (you know her I don’t need to elaborate here) in her grubby little political muck raking cartoon and why?

Bernard that’s technically two questions isn’t it ? But the answer to the first one is no. Hopefully you don’t require further clarifications on a two-letter word.

But the most humorous part is watching people here who didn’t say boo while our Prime Minister offended the entire nation of Japan getting hot under the collar about a male conservative politician being attacked by a female conservative politician.

Thank you Penfold, I appreciate you being forthright.

I too, do not believe it was the right thing for Pauline to do.

Pengold, the left wing 🪴.

The gift that keeps on giving with his ridiculous groupthink talking points.
