The view to the west of Civic is living up to the severe weather warning.
Somewhat sadly earlier warnings of blizzard conditions appear to have come to naught.

I like the pic. Not being a city office worker it’s nice to see views of Canberra not usually seen.
We lost power in Downer for about an hour at around 10am when the winds were whipping the trees about. I guess a tree went down on the lines but it looked too cold and wet to go look.

Apparent temp is in the negatives now -0.3 at 10am and ambient is dropping!

Its funny how there are discrepancies between two websites. Weatherzone is putting its “feels like” temp at 2.1. I am assuming its “apparent” temp (there is minimal desctiption). I note that on BOM, its been down to -2.2. Getting close…………

The ongoing fear-mongering of news sources (have you ever noticed how many news headlines have the words ‘fears’ or ‘concerns’ in them?) has conditioned us to be afraid of everything nowadays. Serioulsy, count how many ‘fears’ headlines you read in a week on ABC news or SMH etc. Or type in ‘fears’ in the ABC news search box – scary!
It’s kind of like in ‘Bowling for Columbine’ where the Canadians are enjoying life mainly carefree, and the Americans are locked up tight with guns – afraid to step outside. Pretty soon Australians will have that level of fear and paranoia the way the news is being portrayed recently. From what I can see, they use it to make news stories about what ‘might’ happen, instead of what is, or has, happened. Basically inventing and propogating ‘what if’ stories for web-based media that needs to be updated constantly..It’s basically pre-news that often comes to naught.
Anyway, it was colder and bleaker about 2 weeks ago (with the windchill, it was below zero at midday from memory) but with no/little media attention, no one cared greatly.
+1… it’s a bit wet and windy out. That is all.

Its not overly cold & bitter outside so I am predicting that armageddon might not get to us today.
I would hate to be flying to Melbourne though……..
Where are you? It’s pissing rain, windy, and the apparent temp is 0.
Yep, its raining but the current temp is 10.9??
http://www.weatherzone.com.au/act/act/canberra
What I mean is, when it snows on the Brindies, it usually 5 degrees or less & bitterly cold. Its not that bad this morning.
But when you add 30+ winds to even 10 degrees (which it hasn’t yet reached, though it does depend on who you listen to) you get a wind chill factor of about zero. That’s what is ment by apparent temp.
Sorry, missed that bit, I agree about the aparrent temp but the abient temp needs to be a least 5 degrees before you can confidently say snow. that would put the aparrent temp at say -5 to -10 depending on the wind & conditions.
It may still happen yet as the abient has dropped a couple in the last hour but, really, its just winter as we used to know it.

Pfft. If you call this “fear mongering”… Let us have some fun getting excited about stormy weather stories and black cloud pictures. Nothing else is happening in Canberra at the moment.

The temp is about 10 degrees, but apparent temp takes wind chill etc into account. Pretty miserable out there.

Agree, a classic example of this was when both the big TV monring shows “had” to be in FNQ for the “biggest cyclone ever” that fizzled out to half the blow of the 2006 one. Yep it caused damage but FNQ didnt fall into the sea because of it.
