YouTube, thanks to “spinningreel” has thrown up a gem of a 6 minute doco on the history of the Cotter dam.
So many things I did not know about all the infrastructure out there.
And so re-assuring to see that cockups are nothing new.

After leaving a tropical/coastal zone to come to canberra, Casurina Sands was a welcome god send for me and my kids.
Nice find, well done.
Great! Thanks JB
There is a great book available through the library entitled “the engineering history of Canberra” or a title similar to this (sorry it’s been a while since I read it)A very informative read on the building of the regions bridges, lakes, major buildings etc. If you enjoyed this video, you would probably enjoy the book.
I miss going for the walk up to the Dam, across the bridge up the rocky stairs… One of my kids got to experience the walk but my younger child will never, anyone remember the Daleks …exterminate, exterminate.

I can’t accept the 10,000 figure though, there just isn’t enough room for that many people out there.
Yeah, I found that mindboggling.
When I was a kid my dad almost convinced me that the two pipes coming up from the the Cotter were for hot and cold water 🙂
That clip brought back some memories. In the late 40’s we used to drive to the Cotter for a picnic and in those days it was corrugated dirt road all the way from Yarralumla. The road got quite hairy near the Cotter as it was winding down hill and quite narrow. It took nearly all morning to get there and most of the afternoon to get back again. The snags never tasted better.

Thanks for the clip JB.
Imagine the glory days of the cotter – 10,000 people there – man what a fun atmosphere… I still miss wandering over to the pub to get a calippo.
That was great, I never knew any of this! As a kid I spent plenty of time down there. Just so beautiful in Summer. Thanks for a wonderful history lesson 🙂
Thanks JB.
Another great link worth viewing.
A place my children will spend time swimming with family and friends.
Fascinating. I never knw about that. Hopefully one day there will be enough water for people to enjoy it again.
