We have a berry bush growing in our yard over our grape vines. The berries are bitter and they have a strange foamy flesh and alot of air in the berry. Here are some piccies:

Yuck! Scab-berries taste of scab, and snot-berries….well you know.

Assuming that anything that you can find growing is safe to eat or taste is a great way to remove slow learners and people with short memories from the gene pool.
So knock yourselves out.

This brings me to the face that I’ve seen a few people picking blackberries around the Cotter and by the lake recently- I assumed that they probably weren’t great for eating as they would have been poisoned. Is it a case of if there’s fruit growing, they’re safe to eat?
It depends of where they are growing, Blackberries that have been poisoned should not be eaten, but there are many areas where they are not poisoned. We pick several kilos a year to make jams with and we have a certain place we pick from that TAMS have confirmed are not poisoned.

I am not an expert, but these look like Snowberries to me. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Snowberry
When I grew up in Europe, we used to pick them off the bush and whack them on the street – which makes a noise just like popping bubble wrap. Seems to be a better use than eating them since they are mildly poisonous. 🙂
Just had a really weird flashback to my youth in the UK. I do recall doing the same thing with some kind of berry for the satisfying noise it made. Thanks for that!!
Agree, don’t eat unidentified berries.
