It is my melancholy duty to inform you all that Belco Goodberries is alas no more.
The place is closed, chairs and tables up, no staff, and a sign on the door.
Where do i get my frozen custard fix now ?

is it true that the belconnen jigsaw has changed hands and will become a rubees store?
I can assure you, as one of the owners of the Woden store, that we’re not selling ice cream. Last time I checked, Belconnen were using the exact same mix that we are, and it is very much frozen custard. I’d be happy to sit a tub of ice cream next to a tub of our frozen custard any day so that you may see how much better frozen custard (sold at Jigsaw, and yes, at Rubees too) tastes.
There is a small difference in the way that Rubees and Jigsaw prepares their concretes. Rubees mix theirs more after adding flavours, which creates a ‘slushier’ concrete – not necessarily a bad thing, depending on your taste. Jigsaw concretes are more like the old style Goodberry’s in that they are thicker in texture.
Cameron I have been to Belco Jigsaw and Dickson Rubees and they are nothing alike. Jigsaw seems to be selling Ice cream while Rubees seems to have old school frozen Custard, the only similarity I see is that everyone is still selling concretes. And I saw the Goodberry’s guys off the ads there behind the counter so I’m guessing that it’s the closest thing to Goodberry’s I’m gettin.
update: I went to goodberries Dickson on friday night, as I was in the area.
verdict: Tastes just like home-made icecream mix (I had the vanilla base)
Triple bottom line: I would take other peoples children there for a sugar hit in preperation for giving them back.
bonfire, they should put you in the television commercial advertising goodberries.
I’m going to pop in (I’m a goodberries virgin) based completely off your summarisation there.
My image is of course of norman gump walking into a 50’s style diner, and melodromatically ticking off a bizarre checklist of requirements in order to meet his equally bizarre sense of tastes, but that’s what I want to go check out.
After getting out of work late last night i stopped by goodberries on my way home.
Although it had been closed for urgent maintenance, i couldnt see any change inside.
Pink cushions – check.
Screaming TV’s – check.
Identical interior – check.
i asked for a concrete and sat down. i noticed lots of girls wearing hijabs. i guess that after fasting all day, a hit of frozen custard does the trick. ramadan during daylight savings must suck.
no newspapers! that must be the radical change.
My concrete arrived and i slurped away. service was at normnal speed, no slower than usual. i dont believe frozen custard should be rushed. i think its part of the slow food movement.
the flunky making mine must have had an accident as there would have been 20 complete glace cherries in it! there were adequate pineapple and lychee flavourings.
The kids at the table next to me were getting into their nachos. They look tasty, and use the round corn chips. i didnt try them though.
Next time i think.
Peterb – any chance of making the chili dogs have some bite to them again?
I, too, frequented said establishment as recently as Saturday night (although my frequenting is merely infrequent at best).
While the location sucks for the passer-by type of customer, everyone who’s anyone knows where it is.
That lovely pink decor needed a lot of repairs. And I was in there the other night thinking that it could use some maintenance. So there you go.
i shall visit this arvo and report back.
essential maintenance ? upgrading the custard machine ?
chocolate, vanilla AND NOW DURIAN!
i hope you havent shitcanned the lovely pink decor.
Jigsaw/Goodberries at Belconnen was closed on Wednesday 2 November 2005 for essential maintenance. We were expecting to re-open on Friday at 4.00pm BUT NOW WE WILL RE-OPEN AT 2.00pm TODAY – THURSDAY 3 NOVEMBER.
asian bookroom went downhill when it changed from old to asia-pacific.
i remember arguing that easter island was in the pacific. if youre gonna specialise…
alices on the other hand, was a pretty good 2nd hand bookshop. some of the prices were a bit optimistic, but i found some gems in there.
I only went to Goodberry’s at Belco twice. Nice product but painfully slow service. So bad I never wanted to return. I suspect that and a truly lousy location led to it’s demise.
Rubees is exactly the same as Jigsaw/Goodberry’s. Same product. Same store. Much the same staff. Different sign.
Jigsaw Belconnen closed?
NOOOO! WTF is going on with the world?
Damm, i found it really cool that there was a frozen custard shop near my dad’s place. and now it’s gone..
but rubee’s is the most awsomest shop ever. it’s better than jigsaw/goodberrys 🙂
WTF? Alice’s is gone???
Belco is going the way of the dodo at this rate…
Who cares about Goodberries or some other rotten frozen confectionary shop, Alice’s bookshop is gone as is the Asian Bookroom! Isn’t Belconnen allowed to have a half decent secondhand bookshop any more?
Wanniassa’s a long way to go when you’ve just seen a movie in Belconnen…
There’s a goodberries in Wanniassa or somewhere Southside too, I think.
Goodberries and Rubees are now officially stupid anyway….they contain gluten and I can’t eat it so, bah!
Now Sam, we’ve had this conversation. Goodberry’s is not custard like what you buy in milk cartons from the supermarket, so that wouldn’t work.
But yes, this is sad news. Now where will I go for after-movie sweet fixes? Though I must say, last time I tried to go there it was about 10pm, the sign on their door said they shut at 11pm but all the doors were locked and none of the staff would let us in.
Perhaps you could start your own frozen custard shop? (Alright, I’m not taking this seriously and will stop commenting on the matter.)
Buy custard from the supermarket and stick it in the freezer?
