After rocking the Woodford Folk Festival over the new year, John Schumann and the Vagabond Crew are heading to Canberra on 14 March 2008.Anyone who wasn’t on another planet in the late 70s to mid 80s would remember the iconic Australian band Redgum, and their driving brand of ‘complaint folk’ that so hit a nerve with Australians’ political and social consciences. Who could forget the anthemic ‘I Was Only 19 (A Walk in the Light Green)’ which not only still finds airplay in its original and live versions, but found a whole new audience when ‘The Herd’ recorded their version. After going solo in 1986 and releasing the brilliant ‘Etched in Blue’ album, John then dabbled in children’s music. In late 2005, John released an album of songs drawn from the poetry of Henry Lawson. The highly acclaimed ‘Lawson’ album features appearances by friend Rob Hirst plus Hugh McDonald, Russell Morris, Mike Rudd, Shane Howard and Broderick Smith.John has now been signed to ABC Records which released ‘Gelegnite Jack’, a collection of John’s best songs over 30 years in the industry, and a new album is due out this year, featuring a collection of songs focussing on Australians who have served overseas.John Schumann is bringing the Vagabond Crew to Canberra on Friday 14 March to showcase songs from ‘Lawson’, give a preview of the songs from the new album, and play some favourites from the Redgum days. Joining him among many others will be Hugh McDonald, John’s old mate from Redgum days, plus a swag of talented singers and musicians. Friday 14 March, 8pm, Burns Club, Kambah. Tickets are just $25.To pre-order/order, contact Songland Records, Tuggeranong on (02) 6293 4677.You can reserve tickets by leaving your details and a mobile number, you’ll get an SMS message when tix are on sale and then you’ll have a couple of days to arrange payment. But do NOT delay as tickets will be limited and they will go fast.http://www.schumann.com.au/john/john.htmlhttp://www.henrylawson.com.au/Message sent to you in the interests of the love of good live music in Canberra, courtesy of Songland Records, Tuggeranong and Overheard Productions.
