ACT Policing apprehended four drink-drivers and a disqualified driver during Random Breath Testing operations on Canberra’s streets last night (Friday, February 15).
Between 6.15pm and 8.30pm, 285 motorists underwent roadside screening tests on Gungahlin Drive, Bruce. A 21-year-old P-Plate driver returned a Blood Alcohol Concentration (BAC) level of 0.197, along with a 48-year-old Banks man (BAC reading 0.060) and a 49-year-old Evatt man (BAC reading 0.051).
Being a provisional license-holder the P-Plate driver’s license was suspended.
In addition a 25-year-old Ngunnawal man was arrested for driving while disqualified. He will face court at a later date.
Later on in the evening 191 alcohol and 16 drug screening tests were conducted on Barry Drive, O’Connor. A 39-year-old Kambah man returned a BAC reading of 0.059.
Acting Traffic Operations Superintendent Rod Anderson said it is alarming that some drivers are not getting the message and are continuing to ignore the law.
“It’s quite frightening to think there are people within our community who are willing to gamble with the lives of other road users when they get behind the wheel,” Acting Superintendent Anderson said.
“If you drink and drive on our roads you will be caught and you will be prosecuted.”
As part of its multi-agency road safety strategy, ACT Policing actively targeted drink and drug-affected drivers between November 2012 and January 2013. Police removed 343 drink-drivers from Canberra roads, as well as 10 drivers detected under the influence of illicit drugs.
