ABC Online is reporting on concerns raised by the Greens in this media release about relaxation of safeguards on the use of Electro-Convulsive Treatment (ECT).

In the absence of other material, can one of our readers please explain why it this is such a good idea that both parties should combine to keep it out of committee?

I know someone whose grandmother had to have it on a regular basis, (every few years) and her family swore by it. It was voluntary though – she knew she was going to have it.
Perhaps they want to get it through quickly to avoid the protesters – ECT always attracts strongly polarised opinion.

Can’t answer your question, JB, but the ABC Report does make it sound as though the Mental Health Tribunal is on duty 24/7, which patently is crap.
Seems to me no-one should authorise involuntary ECT Therapy unless they’ve experienced it themselves;you can bet no-one on the MHT has ever had it, so perhaps it’s high time they all got a dose of it – to help them make sensible decisions. And as for the pollies who’re keeping it out of Cttee, they should get it too – just for good measure.
PS: No, I’ve not had it either…
