A 34-year-old man who allegedly forced his partner to consume drugs “completely disregarded her ability to consent”, a prosecutor has claimed.

The Watson man faced the ACT Magistrates Court on Friday (7 November), where he applied for bail.

Region is not naming the man to protect the alleged victim’s identity.

An ACT Policing spokesperson said the man coerced his then-partner into consuming drugs on multiple occasions, despite the woman repeatedly objecting.

The court heard that one of these substances was a white powder (which the man allegedly made the woman take by kissing her on the mouth), while the other was tablets.

Police also allege the man slapped her in the face and also damaged a wall and floorboards.

She reported the allegations to police and he was arrested on Wednesday evening (5 November).

Prosecutor Bwalya Chifuntwe opposed bail due to the risks of further offending or endangering the safety or welfare of others.

He described the allegations as having an “underpinning of coercive control” and that they represented an “exercise of [the man’s] will against the complainant”.

“[This is a] timeline where the defendant has persistently imposed his will onto another person, being the victim,” he alleged.

The 34-year-old has been charged with two counts of administering a drug dangerous to a person, two counts of aggravated common assault and two counts of property damage.

When refusing his bail on Friday, Special Magistrate Sean Richter described the allegations as “extremely serious”.

He is next scheduled to face court later this year.
