A man has been refused bail over two alleged attacks on his partner, which included leaving her with facial injuries.
The ACT Magistrates Court heard that on 5 May 2025, the woman allegedly woke up to find the man in her bedroom. He reportedly threw her across her lounge room, causing injuries to her eye and hip, and damaged her phone.
Then on 5 August, he is alleged to have punched her multiple times, dropped her head-first onto the kitchen floor and choked her. He also allegedly damaged her phone.
She went on to claim it was like she had been hit all over her body.
An ACT Policing spokesperson said the woman suffered facial injuries and required hospitalisation.
On Thursday (7 August), police tried to arrest the man in Wright. He allegedly jumped over a balcony in an attempt to escape them, but was still arrested.
He appeared in the ACT Magistrates Court over the phone the next day (8 August) where he was charged with two counts each of assault and burglary, as well as single counts of damaging property and choking.
The 37-year-old, whose name is being withheld to protect his partner’s identity, applied for bail, which was opposed by the prosecution.
His defence lawyer said he worked as a casual concreter, sent money home to his mother in Tonga every week and had struggled with illicit substances.
Magistrate Amy Begley didn’t even need to hear from the prosecutor before refusing bail.
She said the allegations were extremely serious and she thought he posed a risk to the woman.
The man was remanded in custody and the matter was adjourned to 12 September.
No pleas were entered.
