An accused attempted burglar is in custody after he allegedly pretended to be a police detective when trying to break into a south Canberra home.
Police received a report of a person trying to gain access to a home in Rivett after 8 am on Saturday (26 July), an ACT Policing spokesperson said.
A man allegedly told the home’s resident he was a detective, but when the resident asked him to produce identification to confirm this position, he failed to do so.
He then allegedly pulled a hatchet out of his pocket and tried to open the front door.
Shortly afterwards, police found a man, who is alleged to be the attempted burglar, as he was walking away from the home.
He allegedly resisted the officers and was arrested after a short chase on foot.
When they searched him, they allegedly found a number of bladed weapons, items suspected of being associated with committing burglaries and suspected stolen property.
He was handed 11 charges including attempted aggravated burglary and falsely representing as a territory public official.
The case was briefly mentioned in the ACT Magistrates Court on Monday (28 July), but the man, a 29-year-old from Rivett, did not appear in person and the court heard he was not required.
Chief Magistrate Lorraine Walker ordered that he be taken to hospital for a mental health assessment.
He will return to court at a future date.
