Bail has been granted for a man accused of spitting at or assaulting four police officers after his arrest.
Officers responded to a disturbance at a home in Torrens at around 6 pm on Sunday (15 June) and arrived to find a man trying to leave the area in a white Mitsubishi SUV, an ACT Policing spokesperson said.
When they stopped the SUV and asked the man to undergo a breath analysis, he allegedly refused multiple times so he was arrested and taken to the ACT Watch House.
“While at the Watch House, the man continued to be belligerent toward police, spitting at and physically assaulting multiple officers,” the police spokesperson alleged.
The man, 39-year-old Benjamin John Gray Moulding, faced the ACT Magistrates Court on Monday (16 June) where he was charged with four counts of assaulting a frontline community service provider and refusing to provide an oral fluid sample.
The court heard his assault charges related to four different police officers.
His lawyer, Alana Clarke of Legal Aid, said bail was not opposed on conditions. Acting Magistrate Sean Richter raised some conditions, including that Mr Moulding not drink alcohol.
“Are we setting him up to fail?” he asked.
“Sir, are you okay with not drinking?”
Mr Moulding replied, “Yes, sir”.
Bail was granted and the matter was adjourned to 14 July. No pleas were entered.
