Police have charged a man with family violence offences after he allegedly assaulted, indecently abused and stalked his ex-partner several years ago.
Earlier this week, police went to a woman’s home and spoke to her about multiple alleged family violence offences that began in 2022, an ACT Policing spokesperson said.
On Wednesday night (21 May), police arrested a 36-year-old man at his home. He isn’t named to avoid identifying the woman.
He faced the ACT Magistrates Court on Thursday (22 May) and was charged with two counts of assault as well as single counts of stalking and committing an act of indecency.
The court heard he is accused of committing the offences between 2022 and 2024.
He applied for bail and his lawyer, Rachel Fisher, said the prosecutor did not oppose it on conditions.
Magistrate Alexandra Burt said the woman claimed to police that the man would continue to engage in similar behaviour if released on bail.
The magistrate wanted to ensure safe arrangements were in place before she granted bail, but noted the man had no criminal history.
“What’s alleged against you is family violence offending, which the court takes seriously,” Magistrate Burt told the man.
Bail was granted on conditions including the man live in northern Canberra, not harass the woman, only contact her under limited circumstances and not be near her home.
The matter was adjourned to June. No pleas were entered.
