Officers frisking a man who had walked away from a parked car near a Gungahlin school allegedly found he was carrying around 37 grams of cocaine.
The arrest was made after police saw several people approach a Toyota Camry that was parked next to Gungahlin College’s basketball courts at around 7:50 pm on Tuesday night (25 November).
The officers spoke to three men sitting in the sedan before the trio got out of the car and left the area, an ACT Policing spokesperson alleged.
“About 8:10 pm, police stopped the three men on the footpath on Ernest Cavanagh Street in Gungahlin,” they said.
“Using emergency search powers, officers searched a 23-year-old man, locating a plastic bag containing what was suspected to be approximately 37 grams of cocaine, subsequently arresting him.”
Police also searched the Toyota Camry and allegedly seized a flick knife and a meat cleaver, as well as 19 bags containing green vegetable matter, which is suspected to be cannabis.
The 23-year-old man, Louis Shuang of Bonner, faced the ACT Magistrates Court on Wednesday (26 November), where he was formally charged with one count of trafficking cocaine.
His lawyer, Eimear Silk of Legal Aid, said the prosecution opposed bail and he would not apply for it that day.
Chief Magistrate Lorraine Walker formally refused bail and remanded him in custody until 18 December in order to enter a plea or for a further mention of the matter.
Police said their inquiries into the incident on Tuesday night were continuing.
