ACT Policing will be focusing on Seat Belts for the month of April as part of the road safety campaign.
Every year in Australia more than 20% of all the road fatalities involve a person, including children, not being properly restrained.
Superintendent Mark Colbran has said that focussing on and adopting a zero tolerance to this offence will go a long way to reducing death and serious injury on our roads.
“It is an offence to drive while not wearing your seatbelt or to permit passengers under the age of 16 to travel in your car without seatbelts ” said Supt Colbran.
ACT Policing will also be focusing on push bike riders in April, with a particular focus on riders not wearing helmets, riding across pedestrian crossings and not having lights or reflectors on while riding when it’s dark.
In March 127 people were caught drink-driving during the month long targeted campaign. Nearly one third of these are recidivist offenders, having been caught at least once before for drink-driving.
Six people recorded readings over 0.200, five men and one woman. The highest recorded reading for the month was from a 28-year-old man who recorded 0.297. The man has a 0.00 licence.
