MEASQ/MEASPL Bass Battle Car Sound Competition

I agree it is difficult to be completely objective when using the human ear as a measurement tool, however I think we do a pretty good job of it. We use range of high quality reference level recordings. All judges study the material closely including attending training on what we are looking for. It is also the best way we can judge such a thing. An RTA only tells you part of the story, it won’t tell you if there is distortion happening, it wont give you an indication of tonality and it certainly cannot measure imaging or staging.

As for people who have an issue with the competition, please bear in mind we do not condone those who drive around blaring their system disturbing those who don’t wish to hear it. I personally can’t stand people that do that and find it extremely rude and obnoxious. The vast majority of our competitors come to these events for an opportunity to socialise with like minded people that have a passion for car stereos. The sound quality competition is the main focus of our events and is actually about the ability of a system to accurately reproduce the music, not about how loud it is.
Yes we run an SPL competition too, but personally I can’t stand it nor do I understand the appeal. But some people get a kick out of it, and it is certainly more enjoyable to watch than someone sitting in a car judging sound quality. We simply run it as there is a demand for it.

Yes there are a fair number of classes, this is to cater to people with a range of experience and also different systems/budgets.
Our last event on 4th February hosted by Autotech Services was only a Sound Quality round and we had 18 competitors. No idea how many we can expect for the SPL side.

Obviously. That was kind of my point – there exists the technology to provide an objective assessment of sound reproduction, volume etc etc – I was kind of surprised that a competition of this nature wouldn’t use it.

Wow, there are rather a lot of different classes. Just how many people turn up to compete in this kinda thing?

Wouldn’t an objective comparison be more useful? Where’s the competitive value in judging subjectively?
