Mister Toad's wild ride in a blue barina

ACT Policing has arrested a 21-year-old Queanbeyan man following a pursuit through parts of NSW and the ACT last night (Friday, October 15).

About 7pm NSW Police were parked at the intersection of Morton Street and Richard Avenue, Queanbeyan when they observed a blue Holden Barina travel past above the posted speed limit.

When police activated their warning lights the alleged offender accelerated away and police initiated a pursuit. The offender made his way through Queanbeyan and onto Uriarra Road, continuing onto Norse Road and into the ACT.

The offender made his way through the suburbs of Symonston and Narrabundah eventually entering Fyshwick.

As the offender made his way through Fyshwick an ACT Policing Traffic Operations officer riding a marked police motorcycle saw the NSW police vehicle in pursuit and also engaged in pursuit, activating lights and sirens.

The offender stopped at a set of lights and the officer shouted to the offender that he needed to pull over.

Shortly afterwards the vehicle came to a stop and police approached the vehicle. The man attempted to escape and wrestled with police; however he was overpowered and placed under arrest. The pursuit lasted for 7 minutes.

During a search of the offenders vehicle police found what is suspected to be cannabis.

The man was taken to the ACT Watch House and charged with possess a prohibited substance and a series of traffic offences including driving while disqualified.

The man was given Watch House bail and will appear in the ACT Magistrates Court at a later date.

I’ve never understood that either. I ride motorcycles and there’s no way I’d be getting around in just a shirt if I had to do the things that those officers have to. I know that by law you’re only required to wear a helmet, but it’s just way too easy to get skittled by a car on the road – even when you’re not getting involved in high speed pursuits. Not worth the risk, in my opinion.

They had him flattened out like laundry on the road, that’s for sure. One of the spectators joked that he wasn’t going anywhere anytime soon with 3 cops’ knees in his back!

Sounds like there’s a lot of way being made on the streets of Canberra and Queanbeyan.

Rego ACT put my teal car down as “black” when they registered it.

What a lot of weird colours, “seafoam”, is that even a real colour? I’ve never heard of most of them. Banana would be a dirty yellow and black, surely?

Teal is a pretty common colour and deserves its own name, I can’t recommend it for cars though.

According to the cop report, the motorbike cop was an ACT one, stooging around Fyshwick who saw the pursuit (the plain car was apparently the NSW cop?). I was surprised to see a cop just in a short-sleeved shirt, but maybe he was out doing something that only warranted a shirt.

I never did figure out why construction workers on the road side must wear long sleeves to prevent sunburn, and all manner of clothing is required for OH&S in other industries, yet cops can be involved in pursuits while wearing a shirt?

I dunno, they have better OH&S committees?

I never did figure out why construction workers on the road side must wear long sleeves to prevent sunburn, and all manner of clothing is required for OH&S in other industries, yet cops can be involved in pursuits while wearing a shirt?

Well it wasn’t blue! And it wasn’t green either. It was old and pretty horrible, and a very ugly teal. And they didn’t get him at the lights, they got him at the roundabout outside hungry jacks, and only because the motorbike cop cut him off. Oddly, that cop was wearing short shirt-sleeves, too. I find it hilarious that the barina managed to evade the cops all the way from Queanbeyan to Fyshwick. surely the driver of the barina wasn’t that skillful!
