Hi.
I’m hoping that someone can point me to a butcher that sells mutton (sheep) not lamb. I’m looking for a butcher in the Canberra or Queanbeyan area?
Many thanks.

Hey patrick_keogh,
Thanks for the clarification ! You are a champ
Hi TeePee ,
There is a butcher in dickson next to the service station who has their own local farm , would certainly recommend that you check them out.

My 2 cents.

I bought a shoulder of hogget from Pacifik Halal Meats a week or so back. It had a “Lamb” sign on it but at 2.7kg its lamb days were far behind it.
I always laugh at the supermarket “lamb” loin chops with over a centimetre of fat on them.
Some of those “lambs” die of old age before they reach the slaughterhouse.

The Ainslie IGA often have mutton on the shelves in their meat section.
And in answer to zlluah – no it is not goat – it is meat from an older sheep. http://homecooking.about.com/od/cookingfaqs/f/faqmutton.htm

Hmmm Correct me if i am wrong, But i guess Mutton is also called Goats meat right ?
Sorry, you are wrong, well at least in Australia and some other countries. In Australia, NZ, Canada, the UK and perhaps some others, mutton is the meat from an adult sheep. I know the words are used interchangeably in some Asian cooking though.

Mutton dressed as leopard?
Most of what is sold as lamb by the supermarkets is really hoggett or mutton anyway.
Jordo’s chop shop might have some, or you could substitute goat in to the recipe instead.
You could try Pacifik Halal Meats in Gungahlin on Ernest Cavanagh Street. They sell a lot of different cuts which are suited to Indian and Middle Eastern cooking. The quality is usually really good.
