The Canberra Private Hospital in Deakin will close in September after its operator, Nexus Hospitals, decided to pull the plug on the facility, which had been struggling financially.
Nexus Hospitals said it made the decision after careful consideration of the hospital’s operational and financial position.
A final date of operation had yet to be decided, but the doors were expected to close in September.
Nexus said its focus was on maintaining the high standard of patient care that Canberra Private Hospital had provided for many years and minimising any disruption to patients.
It was supporting employees and working with doctors to transition their surgical sessions to other hospitals once the hospital closes.
Nexus Chief Executive Greg Hall said the decision had not been taken lightly.
“Unfortunately, despite considerable efforts to explore all viable options, the hospital is no longer financially sustainable and continuing operations is not possible,” he said.
Mr Hall said the priority now was to work closely with doctors and staff to maintain safe, high-quality care during the transition and minimise disruption for patients.
He said the financial sustainability of private hospitals was challenging for many operators.
“The Nexus Hospitals group remains strong, is growing, and continues to pursue opportunities in other markets, including acquisitions and expansions,” he said.
Several private hospitals across Australia have closed in recent times with the sector beset by rising costs, falling profitability and issues with private health insurers.
Located in the Equinox Business Park, Canberra Private Hospital was founded in 2011 and provides specialised surgical services.
The website says that after opening with three theatres, surgeon demand supported an expansion program to build a fourth theatre and a state-of-the-art upgrade of the existing theatres.
Canberra Private Hospital offers the four operating theatres, a day surgery recovery room, 38 beds for longer post-operative stays, each with its own ensuite, including 32 single rooms, inpatient physiotherapy to support recovery from surgery, diagnostic services, including pathology, ultrasound and radiology, and pharmacy services.
The hospital covers a range of surgeries, including plastic and cosmetic surgery; ear, nose, and throat complaints; ophthalmology; IVF procedures; gynaecology; and urology.
Nexus Hospitals was founded in 2013 with a vision to transform private healthcare by establishing a network of specialist day and short-stay hospitals, according to its website.
Since then, it has expanded to operate 22 hospitals nationwide. In 2023, Nexus acquired Montserrat Day Hospitals.
