They lit the fires on Dec 30, were charged, and deported by January 6.

And in practice, people start their sentences in Australia, so they must be charged, convicted and sentenced. It is also voluntary, so the prisoner must want to go. Many stay, in the hope that they can fight the deportation as the end of their sentence approaches.

So the scenario that was described simply does not occur. (Perhaps for diplomats as other posts imply, but most foreign nationals are not diplomats.)

I’m not aware of any visas other than possibly diplomatic visas where it is not possible to charge someone. If you have details of the eastern European case, please share a link.

Regarding ‘diplomatic visas’, there’s different levels of immunity, they’re not the automatic get out of jail free card people assume them to be. Distinctions exist between embassy and consular staff, and then within those two broad classes, different levels exist of liability, further subject to whether they were undertaking official duties at the particular time in question. Very complicated.

You’re quite right that it’s possible to find things out on Google, and that’s one of three possibilities I would think. They either used public domain information to find out the school, or she told them for some reason, or there’s some family/community mutual link that permitted the information to be known. If it was the first, then that indicates a level of planning and sophistication to the efforts of these men that is really quite scary.

Well there were allegedly three men involved, at least one of whom knew where the woman’s child went to school and knew she was married – they don’t sound like opportunists. It can’t have been easy taking that story to the cops, knowing hubby was going to find out about her original intent. (Obviously I am basing this on the facts as reported.)

A married woman meeting up with a man for a hook-up is bad behaviour which should probably mean the end of her marriage and the start of the road to financial ruin (in my experience of divorce anyway). The man bringing two mates along to gang rape her and threaten blackmail and extortion is on a whole new level.
