Recently I tried to book in at the Casino restaurant and was told that if I was booking for more than ten people I would have to pre order my meals for everyone.
Being new to Canberra I need to know – what the hell is with that?

It’s a reasonable request for a small operation. It seems that the CC is that, so much for ‘world class’.
The CC is not a place to eat, it’s a place to gamble. Why are you going there to eat anyway? If you want good food, there are many places within walking distance that will provide much better value.
They were probably amazed and thrown off that anyone would seriously go there to eat. I had a meal there a while ago, and it was awful and overpriced.
seems pretty standard with groups. When we go out for work lunches, when we book they ask us to either pre-book our meals, or order from a small set menu. Same with dinners at posh restaurants, they will offer you a small 3-choices-per-course menu, a degustation, or in the case of not-so-posh restaurants, the banquet deal.
We are having a group dinner at The Press Club next week (George Columbaris’ joint in Melbourne), and we’ll be ordering from a 3 choices thing, downside is we won’t know what the choices are until the night as the chefs apparently change the dishes day by day.
Pre-ordering meals, that sounds a bit silly imo. Are you sure this place can handle a big group? either they’re only catering for the occasional snack, or they’re very poorly organised. I think you’re going to be let down on this meal imo.
Generally with big orders i do call up the place and confirm. I remember ordering 50 pizzas from dominos via the net. I called the manager up a few days before, he was quite thankful as the orders just print out 20min before the pizza is due, this way he can get more staff in.

They aren’t focusing on the gaming over the food and drink service.. They simply can’t keep staff because they are treated poorly, and they always under staff shifts.
Treated poorly and shifts are understaffed because the focus is on gaming over food and drink service & staff. Makes sense to me.

…we stopped there last night and it took us forty five minutes to get served at the bar, does that mean that I need to order my drinks before I get there too?
You’d want to yeah. Clearly the place is focussed on the gaming, and the food and drink services are under resourced. The rare times I’ve been that has been my experience.

Whilst I’ve never been to that particular restaurant, I’ve worked at others with the same policy and the issue is most likely to do with the size of their kitchen and staffing levels.
Smallish kitchens cannot physically cope with many different orders at the exact same time along with orders at different tables. It is most likely the case that their kitchen can handle a certain number of staff working at the same time and if they take large group bookings that are ordering off the menu, they cannot guarantee that those orders (and those of other tables) are delivered at the same time, or in a reasonable amount of time.
Hope that helps
That makes sense, but we stopped there last night and it took us forty five minutes to get served at the bar, does that mean that I need to order mhy drinks before I get there too?
