No, I think that land has been there for a while.

Checked the article – the quote about land to the west was by the Manager of the Hyperdome – definitely not anyone with any expertise in land release and land use policy. As others have said that land is not available to be used for many good reasons including the classification of land restricting its use. There is still at least one site available for commercial between the archives and centerlink buildings and Rowland Rees can always be finished off around the back but that is about it.

More than enough land releases planned in Gungahlin and Molonglo to keep up with population growth for next 50 years i reckon. Collectively they will house 100,000 extra people. I personally can’t see that much population growth in Canberra in the future (unless immigration really picks up). In fact, I suspect there may even be an oversupply of housing stock, especially if a future Abbott govt cuts back the public service and many of the ageing baby boomers move to the coast or retirement villages. My prediction: a lot of vacant houses and (in particular) apartments in the outer suburbs of the future.
The day they cut down Kowen Forest to make way for suburbs is the day i leave Canberra. It would be a step too far in my book (losing Stromlo forest/Deeks park to Molonglo was bad enough). But like I said, I can’t see it happening for 50 years at least, by which time I will be (hopefully) living out my retirement well away from the traffic-infested concrete jungle Canberra would have become
RE Majura Valley – no houses planned for there (aircraft noise constraints etc). I believe it’s destined for broadacre industrial / commercial type land use.
There was a story where the owners of the Hyperdome WANTED land released. Bit different to it actually happening. It’s got me buggered where though, because to the west of the Hyperdome is the river and the nature park which I cannot believe anyone but a greedy developer would want to see developed and even if it were to be developed it wouldn’t generate that much more business anyway.
Guess this really brings home the stupidity of having a town centre on the side of a suburb. The town centre should have been around Erindale or a bit futher south down Ashley Drive.

First home buyers can also buy established houses and the aging still need to shop. The Hyperdome needs something but population growth isn’t the central issue there.
The article quotes someone as saying there are “potential greenfields sites to the west of the Hyperdome”. As others have mentioned Tuggeranong was supposed to extend further but plans to reach the river and beyond were abandoned long ago. I’m not sure how far they could go now without running into zoning/environmental/etc obstacles.
The other recent news was the proposal for a mixed use development opposite Bunnings that’s also been mentioned. Remembering I’d seen drawings I searched and found this.

Tuggeranong shopping centre was meant to be in the middle of the town of tuggeranong. East tuggeranong was going to be built first then west tuggeranong. However due some sort of endangered species west of the river that area became protected. Thats why tuggernong goes down as far as banks rather being a radial town like the rest of the city.

Pretty much the town centre was going to be in the centre. With Bridges and even a cable car (can’t seem to find the link) across the Murrumbidgee river.

I think you’re talking about West Murrumbidgee which was in the original plans for Tuggeranong across the river. Where the Hyperdome is now was originally meant to be in the middle of the area.
I don’t think it will be happening any time soon.
West of Tuggeranong is the Murrumbidgee Corridor and Namadgi National Park.
I believe plans for development in the early 80’s were for suburbs past Banks but protests over impact on Lanyon halted development.
Land for development in Tuggeranong is rare which probably explains the amount of bulldozing of houses and sub-dividing of blocks.
The next nearest land development now is Molonglo which is more Weston than Tuggeranong. Unfortunately blocks there are very small and expensive.
If you can acquire a house on a nice big block of land in Tuggeranong, I suggest hanging onto it.

Perhaps it is being confused with the above previous plans to ummm “Go West”?
The paddock opposite Bunnings is in line for development. Tugg community council I believe supports its development as it is proposed to be mixed use – apartments, retail and offices…..
Their concerns were with height and proximity to the pond from what I remember from a radio story.
As far as I know, nearest land for sale west of Hyperdome is at Tumut.
Maybe one day they’ll build a parkway or tunnel through the Brindabellas … until that happens, it’s probably too far too commute
Years ago there were plans for Tuggeranong suburbs to expand west of the Murrimbidgee (which is why the town centre is located on the western edge of Tuggers instead of in the middle — originally it was going to be in the middle). However, those plans were permanently abandoned in the 1980s or 90s and the planners gave us Gungahlin instead
