Twenty-four new officers were officially sworn in as Constables of Police at the Australian Federal Police College in Barton today (November 25).
Chief Police Officer for the ACT Roman Quaedvlieg joined AFP Commissioner Tony Negus and Minister for Police and Emergency Services Simon Corbell in congratulating the first recruit course from the inaugural Think you’d make a great cop? campaign.
“This is the first recruit course to graduate from the Think you’d make a great cop? recruitment campaign last year, which received more than 1355 applications.
“The 24 recruits graduating today made it through the stringent selection process which for the first time involved assessment centres with our more senior officers, and can now breathe a sigh of relief after a tough 25 week recruit course,” Chief Police Officer Quaedvlieg said.
Chief Police Officer Quaedvlieg was pleased with the inaugural recruit course tailored for ACT Policing, with another scheduled to begin in January 2012.
“Being the first recruit course that specifically called for community police officers I have closely followed the progress of the recruits and their training with interest. I have been very impressed with Federal Development Police Program 3/2011 and the high calibre of the recruits.”
Constable Gareth Saunders was awarded the Commissioner’s Award for Excellence in Recruit Training for his demonstrated excellence in all elements of the program, including teamwork, leadership, communication, academic achievement, health and safety and commitment to the values of the AFP.
The newest ACT Policing officers comprise 12 men and 12 women, ranging in age from 24 to 51. More than half originate from the ACT, and bring a wide range of experience and skills from previous careers which include time served in ACT Policing Operations, the Army and the United Nations.
The new officers will be deployed to stations within ACT Policing after completing a two week rotation through Traffic Operations.
