Akuna Club patrons won’t be surprised with news that the club is to close next Friday – seems the place is broke.

Big party there next Friday, I hear.

Ouch! *scratches off list*

No, they meant the old, OLD Gypsy bar (which was the Terminus before that).

Somewhat related….after a RiotACT discussion last week, I thought I’d check out the old Electric Shadows for a venue. Only trouble is there’s no for lease sign in the window (or any other contact), same for the old Terrace Bar/Baa Baas upstairs. Perhaps it’s not being leased again? A redevelopment of the building perhaps. Does anyone know how I could find out?

I was told on Wednesday (by someone who was looking at turning the place into a venue for live music and club nights) that the old Electric Shadows space is actually considered unsafe by the authorites at this point; would apparently take a $2.5 million+ sum to get it up to speed as a music venue.

To the best of my knowledge there’s also the terminus/gypsy bar which has remained empty and vacant since it shut it’s doors sometime i think in 1996 or so… As far as i know all the fittings are still there etc.

Although wasn’t the whole reason they left that premises because of issues with other tennants/landlord re:noise? Which was I believe the beginning of the end for Gypsy Bar when it all got dragged through court.

The Akuna Club (I still thing of it as McCalisters) is in a really good spot for noise…far enough away from likely complainers.

i still mourn the loss of toast. f o to the waldorf.

It would be nice if people recognised that Civic is a city centre and not complain that there are actually non-silent activities there.

Yeah the Akuna club has potential as a venue.

It would be nice if there was a real, purpose built live music venue in the city somewhere.

omg i was just at akuna for lunch today – it was PACKED OUT! fonz did mumble something about next friday but i didn’t quite catch what he said – he must have been telling me about them closing down. admittedly i have only been there twice in the last year. poor fonz where will he go 🙁

A generation of old school Customs Officers will no doubt be crying in their beer at the loss of this most favoured of lunch time drinking holes
Many a dark corner of Customs House would be very very quiet after lunch on a pay day thursday

Geez, I remember going there years and years ago when they had Brit Pop night each fortnight I think. Ahh, the memories….

Good theory justbands. The Transit owners were there the other day having a good look around

Hmmm…perhaps not a bad location for a band venue. A bit further away from the hotel than Transit or Toast (when it was open), good sized room & close to Transit so as to create a live music scene street.
