Does anyone know of somewhere with smooth concrete or tarmac so I can practice inline skating? I’m after somewhere with the same smooth surface as the numerous underground carparks around the city. I’d use the carparks but dodging cars is no fun.

If you’re out late on the shared paths, wear flashing bike lights.
You’ll look like a pedestrian from a distance but you’ll be travelling a lot faster.

Along the lake in front of Commonwealth Place/ Reconciliation Place when it’s not too busy is an excellent place to learn.
But best to stick to the path against the lake shore, not use the route/path further back where people ride bikes through the area.
I used to go in the summer evenings as the area was well-lit and there was little traffic, but yes, best to avoid the shared corridor. You can also zip around the flags and up to Reconciliation Place, which also gives you a hill to practice on.
If and when you’re capable enough, do it with an active dog in a harness. They love the pace and actually get to stretch their legs, and you get a bit of a pull. A lake swim half way through makes for a very happy dog. Just have to be sensible about the time of day you choose.

There’s a multistorey carpark at the ANU that is usually very quiet on weekends. It’s accessed of Childers Street at the School of Art end.
The Questacon carpark is a good tip and if that’s busy try the parking spaces between JGB and Kings Ave, or adjacent to Archives and/or the AEC (behind OPH). The latter two aren’t flat but that might add to your fun!
Out behind Questacon is where we take the kids. It’s pretty quiet on the weekends, especially Sunday. There’s a few slopes and obstacles to help you hone your skills, rather than just flat even concrete.
Belco Skatepark is ok if it’s not busy. The national museum (and the ribbon sculpture) is interesting when it’s closed and about Queen Elizabeth Terrace, by the lake is good enough. That’s all concrete though- if you’re after tarmac then the basketball courts behind the school near the war memorial are smashing.
