Online Registration Renewal in Canberra?

Hey guys, I went down to the coast this week and forgot to renew my registration before I left.

I did it as soon as I got home (online) and I was wondering if I was fine to drive or do I have to wait for that sticker to arrive?

You must be lucky – I have done nil and out of date in the past and copped a fine from a very dilligent cop on the Monaro obviously just waiting for someone to ping – came out of nowhere on a bike with lights blazing – I wondered what the heck I had done as the traffic flow was well below the speed limit! So they will get you, but usually only if suitably motivated.

Ha totally 1980s! But seriously, put them on, I got done the other day for not displaying one on the motorbike, but yeah fair enough since I’d forgotten about it for a year! $100 donation to the waste the taxpayers money GDE fund.

Not that this will be of much assistance, but in QLD you won’t get pinged if you’ve paid it. However, these is a ~$150 fine for displaying an out-of-date sticker, so you’re best off removing it and driving around without one if you have paid.

Not having received a sticker is only a defence if you paid before the date shown on the renewal notice. Otherwise it’s up to how nice the cop is.

I’m pretty sure they used to be able to. You just had to make sure you did it in advance so you got your sticker on time. But they did change the legislation a couple of years ago, I believe, so your receipt counts as your sticker until you get it.

I am always incredibly slack with putting that sticker on. Don’t ask why. Got pulled over twice, but never got booked for it. Actually the last time I got pulled over was because I chucked a ewie in a spot I was not allowed to with a police car behind me. I did not have my current rego sticker on my windscreen, could not find it in the car either and I’d left my licence at home. I think the combination of all that (and the incredible mess in my car) convinced the copper that I was just a bit slow but harmless and he let me off after confirming that I was indeed licensed and my car registered.

It’s an offence to drive without a current sticker affixed to the vehicle. That’s separate to whether or not the vehicle is registered.

That said, AFP’s automatic detection systems use the vehicle number plate I believe, so if it’s gone through their computer systems you should be fine.

Risk though is that there may be a processing delay where the computers show the rego has lapsed, which would technically mean driving without any registration, not just the sticker missing and that can be serious.

Best thing is to keep a receipt from the online payment you made handy.

I’ve heard that you can get pinged for having an expired rego sticker on your car also.

Sure they can. As the OP said, he forgot to do it before he went to the coast so he didn’t allow time for the sticker to arrive, hardly the fault of the police or the RTA. Fortunately they police generally give you some leeway, but they could do you for it if you were an arsehat to them.

Anyways, I’m not sure why we even need stickers anymore given this can be done and checked online.
