Pedestrian punch up

ACT Policing has arrested a 28-year-old Yarralumla man after he allegedly assaulted a man at an intersection in the city last night (Friday, November 1).

Around 11.50pm police were conducting mobile patrols along London Circuit (Civic) when they noticed a large group crossing the intersection against the red pedestrian signal. Vehicles were attempting to drive through the intersection along Northbourne Avenue but were forced to stop as the group impeded their way.

A male passenger of one vehicle beeped the horn at the group directing them to move out of the way. The offender then gestured for a fight. The victim exited his vehicle, with the intentions of negotiating with the man. The offender has then allegedly struck the victim in his face.

Police immediately entered the intersection and separated both parties. Police arrested the alleged offender who was taken to the ACT Watch House where he was charged with common assault and crossing when a pedestrian light is not green.

He was bailed from the Watch House to appear before the ACT Magistrates Court on November 12.

Civic used to be a no-go zone after 1-2 AM. It seems that time creeps forward every year. Seems already overrun by seedy types at 10 PM these days.

I’ve seen some people get fines on the northborne and city circle intersection outside the melbourne building. Turns out if you’re drunk, nearly get hit by a car in-front of police, you can get fined.

Yes. Due to police inactivity, people have got so used to breaking small laws without ever having to take reponsibility for it, that they move on to breaking bigger laws.

If the police ruthlessly booked everybody who drives around with their foglights on, or crossed the road against the red light, then all of our society would become much better behaved. POeople would get the feeling that their actions would have actual consequences, and thus they would think a bit more about their actions and end up behaving better.

ACT Policing are very lazy in that regard, they seem to ignore a lot of stuff that doesn’t get ignore by NSW Police. Driving through the Sydney CBD, I was surprised how many officers they had in vehicles, on motorcycles and even on foot pulling pedestrians and drivers up for offences, even if it meant blocking traffic for a few minutes. Here, the Police were right opposite someone who sped into an intersection and slammed on the breaks when they realised it was red, cops did nothing. And they never do anything about the illegal road crossers on Northbourne, nor do most pedestrians seem to mind crossing illegally when theres a cop car at the intersection.

Might have wanted to politely ask for the guy to move. Particular if the guy was just standing there waiting for a response.

Also, from my understanding, you never want to be caught inside the car when attacked. You’re trapped in, seated, wedged in by a steering wheel etc.

I get the impression that the drunks wandered across the road without looking, were honked, blocked the road and said ‘what are u gonna do about it’, guy gets out asking them to get off the road, fight starts. All with the Police watching at a distance.

Yes but he was talking in general about being attacked while sitting in your car. Wasn’t commenting on this case in particular.

Going by the time of the incident I’d say city beats were out and about and were in the right place at the right time.
