Anthony Albanese remains under fire over his government’s response to the Bondi mass shootings, but the Prime Minister is so far refusing to buckle under pressure to hold a Royal Commission into the tragedy.

Amid growing calls for a Commonwealth Royal Commission – from the Opposition, the Jewish community, former High Court chief justice Robert French, and from current and former Jewish MPs – the PM has instead launched a review into Australia’s law enforcement and national security agencies.

Highly regarded former ASIO boss Dennis Richardson, who was also the secretary of the Defence and foreign affairs departments, will lead the review, which will include ASIO itself.

He will report back to the Federal Government in April.

Mr Albanese said the “ISIS-inspired atrocity” at Bondi on 14 December reinforces the rapidly changing security environment in our nation, and the need for security agencies to be in the “best position to respond”.

When pressed further on Monday (22 November) for a Royal Commission, the Prime Minister said the review of police and national security agencies would be thorough and actionable.

“We have commenced the Dennis Richardson review… I don’t think anyone can argue there is anyone in this nation who is more qualified,” Mr Albanese said.

“The Richardson review will enable action to take place.”

Cabinet has now signed off on a range of new measures in the wake of the Bondi attack, including plans for a massive gun buy-back scheme as well as toughening hate laws and bolstering antisemitic measures.

NSW Premier Chris Minns is establishing a state-based Royal Commission into the incident and has also recalled the NSW Parliament to pass urgent gun laws and anti-protest legislation.

Mr Albanese said his government would cooperate fully with the NSW inquiry.

But it is not enough for many, including the Coalition, which is ramping up its criticism of federal Labor’s response to the Bondi attacks.

Opposition Leader Sussan Ley is demanding Federal Parliament be returned and a Royal Commission be launched immediately.

She released an extensive draft terms-of-reference the Coalition wants for a Royal Commission.

Ms Ley said she was willing to sit down with the Prime Minister to refine the terms in order for a Royal Commission to be established before Christmas.

“Bondi is what happens when hate is tolerated and warnings are ignored,” she said.

“This Commonwealth Royal Commission will shine light into every dark corner where antisemitism has been allowed to fester and grow.

“Nothing is off limits. No institution is beyond scrutiny. Antisemitism is not a state problem. It is a national failure.

“That is why this inquiry looks across every level of government and every part of civil society.”

But the Prime Minister said the Opposition’s terms-of-reference were so lengthy and far-reaching that it would bog down for years if established.

“We want urgency and unity, not division and delay,” Mr Albanese said.

“If anyone suggests that it is possible that that will report any time this term let alone years and years to come…

“Every Royal Commission has asked for an extension in time.”

Mr French, who served as Chief Justice of the High Court from 2008 to 2017, issued a statement recommending a joint Commonwealth-State Royal Commission.

“The attack on Jewish Australians at Bondi Beach was a moment of surreal evil,” he said.

“It has given rise to a moral imperative on the Australian nation as a whole. That is an imperative to consider the conditions which gave rise to the attack and the practical mechanisms which were or could have been available to Commonwealth and State agencies to prevent it.

“It requires consideration of the measures necessary to strengthen and add to those mechanisms including enhanced Commonwealth and State cooperation and cooperation with foreign governments and international agencies.

“Nor can we avoid a clear-eyed further public examination of the nature and sources of antisemitism and what can be done to combat it – not as just another species of racism or prejudice but as a societal evil with its own longstanding and bloody history.”

Federal Labor backbenchers Mike Freelander, who is Jewish, and Ed Husic, a Muslim, have both broken ranks to call on the government to launch a Royal Commission into Bondi.

Former Liberal MP and federal treasurer Josh Frydenberg, who is Jewish, described the review of national security agencies as a cop out, when a Royal Commission was what was needed.

Mr Frydenberg has placed blame for the Bondi attacks directly at the feet of the Prime Minister, but he has had to rebuff suggestions he is trying to launch a political comeback for himself.

The Executive Council of Australian Jewry and NSW Board of Jewish Deputies have both called for a federal Royal Commission.

geonoside is wrong but so is mass murder. I understand Isreals right to retaliate but it has gone to far. To starve children is so wrong. but on the other hand so is mass murder.

Why did you move here if you hate us so much. Stay in your own country and fight there.
If you want to stay leave your countries problems overseas.

Royal Commission a really terrible idea in my opinion. Anything relating to the intelligence agencies / their operations would need to be behind closed doors if we want them to be able to maintain their effectiveness. Who is going to be able to provide evidence that would assist inquiries and any helpful recommendations in relation to anti-semitism; and all stakeholders are already looking into gun law reform. They cost a lot of $$ which could be better spent taking action now than waiting for a couple of old geezers to come up with half baked suggestions after they’ve grandstanded and had another 15 minutes in the spotlight. Stupid suggestion by Suss Ley, and way more efficient and effective ways to investigate / inquire and / or take measures to prevent future incidents and deal with the issues.

Nick Tyrrell sticking his head up again standing side by side with the most conservative elements of his party and the Jewish community, demanding the PM take responsibility and hold a Royal Commission into the shooting.

We need a Royal Commission into our intelligence services and the AFP’s counterterrorism organisations to ascertain “how they failed” in their roles to protect our citizens from a terrorist attack. This was despite one of the Bondi Beach gunmen coming to the attention of these authorities six years ago, under a previous Liberal government, for his close ties to a Sydney-based Islamic State terrorism cell and deemed not to be a threat. Why were both him and his father allowed to travel to Indonesia in the weeks leading up to the shooting allegedly to meet with terrorist groups? One of the Bondi gunmen held a rifle licence and half a dozen rifles!

We need to know the answers to these questions as well whether our 30-year old gun laws are still relevant today, whether they failed or if they need to be strengthened!

Bring on the RC. It’ll lay blame for the current wave of anti semitism in the West straight at Netanyahu’s feet.
And it will show Ley & Freudenberg for the shallow political opportunists that they are.

The call for a Royal Commission is purely a political anthem to vent against Albanese. It will achieve nothing except maintain the rage. NSW authorities are well capable of concluding at least some recommendations to achieve at least several meaningful post incident changes.

No Bondi terror Royal Commission. Typical of this secretive, lying Albanese ‘government’. We are still waiting on a Covid Royal Commission!

Albo’s not quite isolated, he’s got Swan and Wong on his desert island. Notably most of the ALP government ministry are staying well off the island.

Though Bowen has jumped in, declaring that no government is perfect. Well we didn’t ask for a perfect government, we asked for one who treated the conflict in Gaza with balance, called out the awful rallies, the synagogue attacks, called out anti-semitism.

But we didn’t get that. We got a government who attacked Israel, supported Palestine, supported the ghastly United Nation’s ICC arrest warrant on the Israeli Prime Minister, stood silent when the hate preachers filled our airwaves. And when that wasn’t enough, they let in 3,000 Palestinians into our country without so much as a security check.

And now they won’t even support the very loud and wide calls for a Royal Commission, presumably because they’re scared of what it will find. And there will be a Royal Commission, it’s just a question of how much hiding and dodging Albanese can keep up. So they’ve earned the right to be completely isolated. That’s what happens when you’ve completely lost touch with decency, honesty and Australian values.

Ha ha ha.

Penfold trying to lecture others on balance. Shame its not April already.

We all know you are a paid up member of the Bibi fan club, and will excuse almost anything the Israeli State. That’s perfectly fine – you are entitled to your opinions, as others are entitled to a different opinion without you throwing around automatic views of people then being antisemitic as a result.

The fact is you can’t hack it that others have enough empathy to think unnecessary deaths of humans, no matter who they are or the political context they live in are bad things. That people can be aghast at both antisemitic behaviour and awful events like Bondi, aghast at terrorists like Hamas, and also aghast at governments like Israel that are in themselves undertaking ghastly actions. That we don’t actually feel the need to ‘pick sides’ as you desperately do.

The most amusing part will be invariably when the Royal Commission happens, and invariably it finds under what administration the failings happened. How you going to twist that story Penfold – may as well start working it out right now…

Not too sure what the Bibi fan club reference is about JS9. What i’m not a fan of is the October 7 2023 attacks which started the waves of anti-semitism in Australia which Albanese has presided over. Those attacks appear irrelevant in your view. I certainly support Israel’s right to retaliate and defend its soverignty and democracy.

If you don’t think anti-semitism is an issue then clearly it’s an ignorance without cure. As for picking sides, well refer to previous sentence.

Penfold back again, the social media troll on a roll, in another one of his meandering and rampaging rants! Given any opportunity and gaining momentum following the Bondi Shooting to vent his long-held contempt and hatred towards the PM and his government!

Penfold and his support for Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who has recently been issued with an international arrest warrant for war crimes including Genocide against the Palestinian people!

I understand a police investigation and a coronial inquest are different from a royal commission in that the commission can make recommendations to parliament. The government still has no obligation to abide by the recommendations. I believe the police, the coroner and presumably ASIO will be conducting a thorough investigation and a royal commission won’t necessarily uncover anything of significance. But sure, go for it. We mostly already know what the agencies that dropped the ball knew, we know that these guys shouldn’t have flown under the radar like they did with their activity. But we still haven’t got any motive or rationale from the perpetrators and I think that’s an important piece in preventing this in the future. I wouldn’t have expected to see Penfold calling for the spending of tax dollars.

A side note. These were Australian jews that were victimised, not Israelis. This insistence on conflating judaism and the zionist government of israel is so so so detrimental, as evidenced by people’s presumed motive of choice for this attack (which might very well be the actual motive).

TG – if you think that motive remains a missing piece of the puzzle perhaps you’re unmoved by the akram’s links to islamic state, haddad’s hate centre and the trip to Mindanao. Motive is pretty clear and it’s rooted in anti-semitism. Just a nastier version than that practiced by Albo and the acolytes.

Perhaps the lack of ability to link these issues is why a Royal Commission is needed. Perhaps Albanese remains, like yourself, in denial. He certainly seems unaware of why public sentiment has turned so strongly against him. Jack certainly has no clue either. Denial is curable, fundamental ignorance is much harder to treat.

I never denied anything besides the assertion that a royal commission will uncover anything of significance that the other investigations won’t already cover. We can speculate based on evidence and isis will take credit for everything if given the opportunity. If that cowards words aren’t important to the investigation, why risk so much to arrest him alive?
So this is islamic state and not hamas? Because I don’t recall anyone worrying about islamic state in the lead up to this. You never called albo an isis supporter. This actually further cements my point about the conflation. I think we will find from investigations that resources that would have stopped these cowards were tied up investigating if

Where did I say anti-semitism was not an issue? Read the actual words on the page, not your made up fantasies.

And where did I say what happened on October 7 was irrelevant? Again, read the words on the page.

As always, penfool putting words in the mouth of others.

What is clear is you are perfectly happy with Zionism and what it is doing at the same time. That is absolutely crystal clear. You value the lives of some above others – you care to treat anti-semitism, but couldn’t care less about other types of extremism.

Interesting too you define sovereignty and democracy as effectively invading another country and occupying large chunks of it, let alone killing huge amounts of innocent people in the process.

What a gentleman you are – not.

Good to see you getting into the Christmas spirit JS9. Out of curiosity did you detect any irony when complaining about “putting words in the mouth of others” and then typing “you define sovereignty and democracy as effectively invading another country” ? No, one suspects not.

Like our island-dwelling Prime Minister, you have not called out the horrors inflicted on the Jewish people on October 7. These events triggered everything which has occurred since in Israel, Gaza and Australia. Following your logic above, not calling them out amounts to tacit endorsement. Gotta love consistency.

But you are fully correct on one front – the lives of most people are far above those who commit and support acts of terror.

Sorry what? Does every comment need an acknowledgement of october 7 now? Does albo need to acknowledge october 7 before any speech? So you’re against welcome to country (which doesn’t mean welcome to Australia) but expect acknowledgement of a foreign event? But you also don’t want foreign influence in Australia. You should try out for the olympics with those gymnastics.
The lives of ALL people are above those who support or commit terror. One can only assume who doesn’t make it onto your sympathy list…
