Police happy with Summernats

ACT Policing has not made an arrest, nor has been called to intercede in this year’s Summernats car festival in Canberra, an outcome which has prompted praise from the event’s Operational Commander.

Superintendent Lesa Gale said that for an event of this size and characteristics to run arrest-free is a tribute to the organisers, and the planning.

“Police worked very closely with the organisers in the lead-up to the event. This year we made the operational decision to have our officers on high-visibility, proactive patrols inside Summernats and the general feedback we have had from patrons and, in particular, the stallholders and small business operators within the precinct, that this was a very positive move,” Superintendent Gale said.

“We maintained a regular dialogue with the organisers throughout the event and when requested, our officers supported security staff in evicting patrons causing issues.

“We will be looking to engage with the organisers again in readiness for next year, to look at new or different processes and practices to keep patrons safe and encourage responsible behaviour,” Superintendent Gale added.

Outside the event precinct, witnesses in Watson yesterday reported a Holden Commodore doing a burnout in the street to police, who identified the vehicle involved and will issue a summons to the P-plate driver from NSW.

Doing the rounds on Twitter is a note to the event that on the Channel 10 news there is a report on drunken blokes harassing and assaulting girls. Pretty easy to be pleased with Summernats if you’ve ignored the stuff that the cameras manage to pick up. Maybe the plods had ‘riding instructions.’

Either your ‘friend’ had way too many drinks to be able to differentiate fact from fiction or you are over exagerating what was said to you. And to say you “KNOW from a friend who went” reduces the credibility of any facts immediately.

Were you there? Can you refute the claims?

Firstly, why would the police be called to a (albeit large) strip show? It’s legal. Might not be to your “friends” taste, but legal none the less. I don’t like Vegemite. Call the cops

The indecent exposure allegation? I’m assuming your “friend” brought this to the attention of security management, event organisers and/or the police? I find it highly unlikely that a security guard (wearing a company uniform with a logo, and a licence number, making him and his last address easily available) would do this. But if it did, the above details would be enough to find the guard and reprimand them either within the company or through the courts.

In regards to the show, no matter how “family friendly” Summernats is billed, it also advertises an ADULT show after the main entertainment. A sensible parent would have their darlings tucked up in bed by midnight anyhow. I assume this is also the logical for the earlier fireworks in Civic for families….so they don’t have to drag the kids through groups of drunks being sick and fighting, girls wearing next to nothing, etc

Before anyone asks, don’t work for/like/ever want to go to Summernats. I live in Watson and the last for days has not been entirely pleasant, but I appreciate that appeals to a percentage of the population who are entitled to have some entertainment from time to time (and it sounded like they had a ball!)

I’m also not a cyclist
