Police are investigating whether a man arrested for allegedly driving a stolen car through northern Canberra may have also narrowly missed schoolchildren when driving earlier this week.

Officers were on patrol in Dickson on Thursday afternoon (24 July) when they spotted a stolen Toyota Camry, an ACT Policing spokesperson said.

They followed the car from Lyneham to Belconnen before directing the driver to pull over.

But the driver allegedly refused to stop, accelerated aggressively towards police and narrowly missed an officer.

The driver then allegedly sped away and was seen driving recklessly, including through red lights and on the wrong side of the road.

But the driver apparently lost control of the car about half an hour later and crashed on Ginninderra Drive.

The alleged driver, a 26-year-old man, was arrested at the scene.

He did not apply for bail when he faced the ACT Magistrates Court on Friday (25 July) and will return to court at a future date.

Police said they suspect the same man was also involved in dangerous driving incidents on Tuesday (22 July) and Thursday morning.

In these earlier allegations, it is alleged he narrowly missed schoolchildren and other members of the public and also drove at an officer.

“Enquiries into these incidents remain ongoing and further charges are expected to be laid,” the police spokesperson said.

The man has been charged with three counts of reckless driving, one count of running a red light, two counts of failing to stop for police, as well as single counts of driving a motor vehicle without consent and driving while disqualified, in connection with Thursday afternoon’s allegations.
