Potential Ikea store for Canberra?

I love the statistic that 1 in 10 Europeans is conceived on an IKEA bed. Could that be the truth? Or a flat-pack lie?

Ikea do deliver from their SA and WA stores. It obviously costs and not everything is available for delivery, but it’s something at least. And I think it is cheaper than the separate Ikea delivery service to Canberra which some bright spark started.

Prices have gone up a bit. Expect to pay $110 as a minimum now, with a scale price depending on the item. Still, it looks like a reasonable deal if you don’t want to spend a day going up to Sydney.

Ikea is about more than “cheap furniture”, it’s a whole experience, and it’s a pain having to drive to sydney to experience the experience. I see a LOT of Ikea furniture in ACT region homes, in real estate ads etc. Clearly they have a lot of customers in this area, the coast, the snowy, Wagga etc.

I’m still gobsmacked that a behmoth like Costco opened up in Canberra, but Ikea won’t.

Ikea could even do a show-store, and do some almost-in-time from Sydney for the big items. Masters are doing that with their carpets, I notice. (which are much cheaper than Ikea’s!).

I would LOVE LOVE LOVE an IKEA store here! And thanks for the suggestion of Bring It Home. We looked into IKEA delivery but the prices were really outrageous. But there’s no comparison of going to the store, enjoying some swedish meatballs at the restaurant, and then seeing all the products….

Implying a political party has any say if a retail store can set up in canberra?

I think the issue has always been that we simply don’t have the population to sustain a large ikea store

yeah but people want to actually test the furniture themselves instead of looking at pretty pictures online.

When you have a couple of guys who deliver Ikea furniture to Canberra as a business, you have a market for the store to potentially open up.
We used a company call Bring It Home to deliver a bookshelf, they only deliver Ikea furniture to homes in Canberra. Ikea quoted us $400 for delivery, we paid Bring It Home $80…nuff said.
