Prepare for takeoff: ACT Government confirms Birdman Rally 'pilot event' only a couple of years away

Another Canberra Day has passed by with a conspicuous absence. But not for much longer, according to the ACT Government.

You’ll remember it … In a suite of promises wheeled out ahead of the October 2024 election, ACT Labor tugged on the heartstrings of every Canberran over the age of 35 with an announcement it would bring back the ‘Birdman Rally’.

For those under the age of 35, here’s the brief: inspired by events overseas, and probably a weird thought in the middle of the night, local television station Capital 7 launched the Birdman Rally in 1985 as one of a series of events held across the city during the ‘Canberra Festival’ every March.

With a $10,000 cash prize as motivation, entrants had to construct a homemade flying machine with anything from old beer cartons to fibreglass frames and then place all their trust in it as they ran and leapt from a six-metre high launching platform at Regatta Point.

It was considered a win if you made it 50 metres though the air before crash-landing in the – at times, 2 degrees Celsius – water of the lake.

By the early 1990s, however, public liability and prize insurance were listed as reasons the organisers could “no longer sustain the high costs of staging the event”, and the Canberra Festival itself bowed out shortly afterwards in 1994 despite incredible public support.

That was it, until 30 years later, in September 2024, when ACT Labor said it “will celebrate the quirky side of our city’s history by bringing back the Birdman Rally to Canberra Day”.

It wasn’t entirely out of the blue.

Earlier that year, in May 2024, the National Capital Authority (NCA) had responded to questions from Region about the prospects of a return of the rally.

“The NCA supports events that showcase Canberra as a wonderful place to live and visit, and a capital for all Australians,” a spokesperson said.

So, that’s not a no. But now they’re back in power, where are ACT Labor’s plans up to?

We have good news, because the ACT Government has told us a “pilot event” is expected to be delivered “in the second half of the term of government”. That’s 2027 to 2028.

“Work has commenced,” a spokesperson said.

“Events ACT is working with stakeholders including the National Capital Authority and other jurisdictions to identify safety, accessibility, environmental and logistical issues for this study to consider, including engagement with the City of Melbourne who are currently delivering a Birdman Rally as part of the Moomba festival.”

On Saturday, 8 March, Melbourne City Council put on what it described as a “long-held Moomba tradition that sees courageous competitors hurtle themselves over the Yarra”.

The first Moomba Birdman Rally was held in 1976 and made a comeback in 2004 after a six-year break.

“Leaping into the unknown, they will hurtle themselves off the Birdman platform, aiming to be the victor and ‘fly’ furthest into the drink of the awaiting Yarra River,” the description reads.

Sound familiar?

The ACT Government says a “key consideration” for the exact timing of the event remains the water level in Lake Burley Griffin which has dropped by 500 mm due to upgrades at Scrivener Dam.

“The NCA has indicated that the lake’s water level will be lower than average for the duration of the project, which is set to be completed by mid-2027,” the spokesperson said.

How closely will the remake echo the heroism of the rally of old?

“Event ACT’s aim is for the rally to maintain its creativity and spectacle while adapting to current safety standards, insurance requirements, and environmental factors.”

Watch this space.

Looks like labor’s best friend the CFMEU will be involved. Hence why it takes years and 20x the original budget.

And strikes because workers don’t have iPads or chocolate ice cream in the canteen

@Futureproof
Nice to see you continue with your crusade, to never left the truth get in the way of one of your inane fabrications, Fp.

The length of time to organise the Birdman Rally corresponds with the generational upgrade of the Monaro Highway, slowly, slowly nearing completion when the iPhone 75 is released

Shouldn’t it be renamed Birdperson Rally?

Must be hard to live in a world where you constantly need to drum up reasons to be aggrieved.

Capital Retro2:17 pm 15 Mar 25

Being aggrieved like a Marxist living comfortably in a capitalist society, eh Seano?
Actually, male privilege is still alive and well it seems if they leave it as “birdman” as it is.
It’s the same as still calling a female King Parrot a female King Parrot.
Yet progressive people now refer to actresses as actors. It used to be that actors were exclusively male and actresses were only female.

“Being aggrieved like a Marxist living comfortably in a capitalist society, eh Seano?”

Your sad obsession with me isn’t even get close to the truth I’m afraid, Capital.

As for the rest of your comment, I rest my case.

Another fake promise.

No it’s a safety issue, but you know jump in the lake and see if half a meter makes a difference to the landing Henry.

Every promise always has some seemingly semi-reasonable excuse. They deliberately only make only the promises where the excuses are already known and planned….

They excel at being completely useless

And you wonder why nothing ever seems to get done, in Australia.

An election promise to bring back the Birdman Rally will require 2 years of planning!

Our hospitals have a funding crisis, our credit rating has been downgraded, and our government is going to spend 2 years consulting and planning what at best could be described as a feel-good event.

It helps to read the article. The hold up isn’t planning it’s the level o the lake which is currently half a meter lower because of the Scrivener Dam upgrades.

There are things to criticise the government about but reason these critics fail so hard is they start from a bad faith position.

GrumpyGrandpa3:54 pm 16 Mar 25

Sure, the lower lake level has been identified as a key issue. You would have thought that the CM would have been aware of this, before announcing his electoral promise.

It’s a bit like the duplication of Atthlon Drive. Make an election announcement, build up expectations, then we learn it’s some time off.

Maybe we’ll see it in time for the next election, maybe the one after that…..

In the meantime, we’ll do a study. We’ll consult with the City of Melbourne who are currently delivering a Birdman Rally…..

My thoughts have nothing to do with starting from a position of bad faith. It’s more about a position of continual disappointment and the ongoing political spin, we get dished up.

Calm down folks! Despite the promises I would bet my bottom dollar that the Birdman Rally will never ever make a comeback in the ACT. Insurance coverage will ensure that.

If it does, I will run around the Assembly naked!

A few years away. Well tgat’s consistent with their ability to do anything quickly.

So in reality the Birdman Rally won’t be here untill 2030, just in time to see 2A of the tram carry its first passengers.

A couple of years? LOL

These clowns couldn’t organise a raffle. No way it takes “a couple of years” to organise an event that needs a platform and empty space.

And then it is just a “pilot” event (I presume the pun is intended). No word that it is to be an ongoing event, as promised. Given (a) the hopelessness of the current ACT Government and (b) the prohibitive insurance costs here in the ACT, the rally will probably be people throwing paper airplanes into the lake. But no doubt Fearless Leader will say that it is the most exciting and progressive Birdman Rally Canberra has ever seen!

Pending the updates at Scrivener Dam, it helps to read the article.

See (a) in my reply. They’ve been working on upgrading Scrivner Dam since 2014, when they first identified the need. Good old Mick Gentleman was in charge, so that meant nothing happened until he left. They now say it will be ready in 2027-2028, so expect 2035-36. BTW- I’m only cynical from experience. Sigh…

Upgrades and maintenance are on going on major infrastructure items all of the time. That doesn’t make it one never ending project. This is not new, specific to the ACT or unusual. What’s unusual is the need to drop the level of the lake for duration of this project which is why the Birdman revival has to be delayed.

Jayce,
Scrivener Dam is a Federal Government asset, owned and managed by the NCA.

What exactly do you want the ACT Government to do about a project on someone else’s property?

I read the article. It’s a beat up. Always excuses for this government, and their supporters are nodding dogs, agreeing to everything it says.

Of course the infrastructure required for this, a 6 metre tower, will be 2 years late and three times over budget.

Work to Scrivener Dam, which is 5km away in a straight line from where the Birdman Rally was run?

It’s an excuse for doing nothing. Jesus, you’ll believe anything that comes out of a labor politicians mouth.

‘I read the article. It’s a beat up.” half a meter is a huge difference in depth especially close to the shore. I’d not a “beat up” just because you don’t like this government.

They could lower that part of the artificial lake. As was done for all the construction work.

Are you saying that the gov wasn’t aware of this at the election given its being on for like 10 years. We fixed the captain cook jet to make it work with lower levels.
