Previously postponed underground light rail works for Northbourne Avenue are a go with sections of the road to be closed from tonight (Friday, 1 August).

The works under Northbourne Avenue will help prepare utilities for light rail stage 2A and to improve the stormwater drainage in the city.

Sections of the road will be shut across two weekends, with works occurring at the intersection of London Circuit and Northbourne Avenue, and at the intersection of Alinga Street and Northbourne Avenue.

The first tranche of works to take place from 8 pm Friday (1 August) to 6 am Monday (4 August).

This will see Northbourne Avenue’s southbound lanes closed between Cooyong Street intersection and Vernon Circle.

Alternative detour routes during the southbound closures are via Wakefield and Limestone Avenues to Parkes Way and Kings Avenue, Cooyong and Coranderrk Streets to Commonwealth Avenue, and Barry Drive and Clunies Ross Street to Parkes Way.

The second lot of closures will impact the northbound lanes between 8 pm Friday (8 August) to 6 am Monday (11 August) between Rudd Street intersection and Vernon Circle.

During the northbound closures, alternative detour routes are via Commonwealth Avenue via Edinburgh Avenue to Barry Drive, Commonwealth Avenue to Constitution Avenue, and Kings Avenue via Parkes Way to Cooyong Street.

“This is a significant step forward as we begin connecting the newly laid services from London Circuit East, under Northbourne Avenue through to London Circuit West,” an Infrastructure Canberra spokesperson stated.

“Once utilities and stormwater are in place, civil and services works on the track and light rail stops will start later this year. Works will take place on weekends to minimise the impact on commuters.

“We apologise for any inconvenience and appreciate the community’s patience while these vital works take place.”

It’s anticipated there will be no impacts to bus services or the city bus interchange due to these upcoming works.

Intermittent weekend closures will be required until mid-2026.

It’s expected one carriageway of Northbourne Avenue will remain open at all times to reduce the impact to the traffic network.

GPS navigation applications will be updated to reflect the changed network and detours.

More information about travel impacts can be found online.

The City and surrounds will never recover from this

That’s a pretty broad statement, why??
