Reiki Recommendations?

Hey Katietonia, if I remember rightly you are about to become a very rich person. I’m sure one or other of the sceptic organisations has or had a million dollar or million pound prize on offer to anyone who can demonstrate this ability to ‘see’ energy. So far all those who have fronted up have not been able to do better than statistical chance, and several apparently performed significantly worse than even chance would suggest.

Let me know if you win this prize, you could slip me a few dollars as a spotter’s fee. Unfortunately once I had absorbed the details of the story I failed to bookmark the article and now have no idea where to look for it, so you might have to do a little digging before you travel overseas to claim your rightful prize.

I know someone who is paid by a hospital to provide Reiki to hospital staff. Interesting that in a modern medical environment someone obviously believes Reiki to be beneficial whether some might consider it a real healing modality or not. Anyway, if you live out Bungdendore way there’s an excellent practitioner working on Saturdays from a shop in the little market square thingy (no idea what it’s called sorry). Otherwise as previously recommended Gerry at the Hierophant is good or you can likely get numerous other recommendations from them.

How would you know? Have you tried it? If not don’t knock it. I’m not easily led, at one time years ago I was sent for hypnosis, it took seven time’s to relieve the migrains headaches, each time I was hyponsitsed the mirgrains would stop a little more each day until they had gone completley, I could not be hypnosised to stop smoking, while many others can, I’m too strong willed, I would only stop if I really wanted to.

you could try “Zen DO Kai”..that is a good way to ward off evil spirits,Muay Thai is also another good one,It uses the negitive energy form the person you are trying to “FIX” and channels that energy through your hands,elbows,knees and feet giving you up to four points of contact with you subject..The beauty of this is,if it has worked correctly,and you have made all four of your contact points successful,your subject usually wants to go to sleep straight after the treatment..Very Rewarding!!

I agree entirely with the placebo effect, I even acknowledge that modern medicines, trialled and approved as their effectiveness, work partially on a placebo effect. Studies have shown that a percentage of patients given placebos show improvements similar to those given the real McCoy.

Reiki relies entirely on the placebo effect. The practitioners who claim that they are channeling some magic form of healing energy are lying, albeit ignorantly and mostly well-meaningly. Any Reiki practitioner who claims he can offer healing through caring sharing and touching has my full support if he’s honest about it.

The reason these practitioners concoct their fairy stories about mystical healing energy and the like is that it appears to confer some sort of legitimacy for the fees they charge. If you and other gullible types are willing to hand over perfectly good money to a conman or woman, you are entitled to. Given a choice, I would rather hand over $65 an hour to a practitioner who offers caring, sharing, listening and even some therapeutic touching, which will relax me and make me better, than the same person telling me they can channel cosmic healing energy. Sheesh, it’s a no-brainer.

Tending to be a bit of a sceptic myself I changed my mind about reiki after hearing about the positive benefits of the therapy on hospice patients. A nursing colleague in Adelaide also told me about doctors in one hospital using hypnosis (via a trained hypnotist) during dressing changes for severe burns patients. It is normally a very painful exercise but with hypnosis the pain was much reduced. Does anyone remember the documentary about hypnosis being used instead of anaesthetic in allergy prone patients.

I will probably always take a sceptical first-look at something but have learned to be more open minded should other evidence (even anecdotal) present itself. The human brain is an amazing organ.

I don’t have any opinion on Reiki either way, but what I can’t stand is those who have such small and narrow minds that they have to rubbish something they probably know nothing about.

I like what Grail said. I am sure we have all been interested or believed in something at some stage which has no “scientific proof”. Shall we start with all forms of religion ? How about basic spirituality ?

As for the doubters, do you believe that marriage counselling works? it’s just people sitting around talking, so how could it possibly have an impact? Do you believe that “therapy sessions” with a psychologist work? it’s just people sitting around talking, so how could it possibly have an impact on a person’s health? Does the way people talk to you at work have an effect on your health and wellbeing? How can it? It’s just words!

Do you believe that treating someone with love and respect will have an effect on that person’s physical health that is different to treating them with scorn and contempt? How can that be? It’s only words, it’s only crap that’s happening in your head. Is it possible then, that given someone has a history of being treated with scorn and contempt, if you bring them into any kind of relationship (lover, friend, or crackpot magic practitioner) where they are treated with love and respect, there will be some positive benefit to their physical wellbeing?

I have personal experience with people who’ve benefitted from Rei-Ki in some way or another. It does work, whether or not you believe in Rei-Ki energy coming from the cosmos being channeled through the practitioner. Just ask yourself – if you show love and respect to someone who has deep emotional issues, will that have an impact on their health and wellbeing?

Rei-Ki works for some people. A wild ride in a supercharged V8 racecar works for other people. What floats your boat may not float someone else’s.

I recommend not doing it.

There’s a search function at the top right, more people using it would save duplicate posts & some of these undying questions people seem to have. Repost common threads or troll-feeder topics at your own peril.

Personally, I see it this way.
Reiki, like homeopathy, psychic surgery, and other “alternative” treatments, would need definable over placebo, expectancy, and conditioned-response levels of success with treatment either when used as a sole medical treatment or complementary therapy before the general population (of which RiotACT is simply a cross-section) took it seriously.
Otherwise its just a personal belief system, not a healing practice.

You know what experts in results-based analysis call “alternative medicines” that have provided statistically significant treatment results?
Medicines.

Yes, I know (sigh). This website is so frustrating at times. It is an interesting and useful source of current affairs in the ACT; and has the potential to be an excellent forum for Canberrans to share information. I have used Riotact before to count on the expertise of other locals for their knowledge and experience (most recently where I could get good quality, fresh oysters from).

I expected that some people wouldn’t be able to restrain themselves from putting their sarcastic comments forward, although am still disappointed when people do. I also wonder how many people are scared off from posting on this site because they know they can expect inappropriate responses.

Again, I didn’t ask for comments on the integrity or validity of Reiki; just on whether people could make any recommendations. I ask that people with other comments to please refrain from posting. You could always start a new post debating the merits of Reiki.

There is insufficient evidence to indicate that reiki is effective as sole or adjuvant therapy for any medical condition, or that it has any benefits beyond possible placebo effects.

Placebos are wonderful things aren’t they? I wonder if their efficacy is actually increased by paying good money for a placebo effect. I guess it must be or Reiki and other spiritual healings would have died off a long time ago.
