More than 650 cars have been fitted with tamper proof screws this year as part of ACT Policing’s joint partnership with local businesses, Project Safe Plate – combatting number plate theft.
This Sunday (August 3), ACT Policing and Westfield Belconnen will be hosting Project Safe Plate between 10am and 2pm.
Motorists are encouraged to bring their vehicles down to the Westfield Belconnen Fresh Food car park, entrance off Emu Bank, where officers will fit tamper-proof screws to the number plates.
Acting Officer-in-Charge of Belconnen Police Station Dave Wills said it was pleasing to see so many Canberrans had already taken the opportunity to safe guard their plates.
“Most people realise that number plates are easily stolen and used in criminal activities. To take a few minutes out of your Sunday to come and have tamper proof screws fitted may save you a lot of trouble down the track,” said Sergeant Wills.
“If your plates are stolen and used in a criminal offence, police may come knocking at your door, asking you to explain.”
Since its inception back in 2007, more than 4000 cars have been fitted with tamper-proof screws by ACT Policing.
The replacement of the screws will be conducted free of charge by ACT Policing officers, recruits and Volunteers in Policing at the location. The process takes a few minutes.
