ACT Policing is reminding motorists that 40km/h speed limits will be enforced in school zones for the start of the new school term next week (Monday, May 2).
Traffic in and around schools will increase greatly from Monday. Traffic Operations Superintendent Mark Colbran has warned of tough penalties for motorists who ignore the speed restrictions.
“Police will be keeping a close eye on driver behaviour around school zones next week as children head back to school,” Superintendent Colbran said.
“It’s important that motorists stick to the speed limit, for the safety of children. Children are not as aware as adults of the dangers associated with crossing the road, particularly if it’s their first year at school or attending a new school,” he said.
Drivers should also take extra care when dropping their children off in school zones.
“Avoid double parking in front of the school or in bus zones. This makes streets congested and creates major problems for the safety of children who need to cross the roads, or who need to be safely dropped off at school,” he said.
