They’ve changed their name to ScreenACT. And moved their website.

Re devt. funding: if you live in ACT, you have the annual round of artsACT funding – better than nothing I guess. You can also try the AFC. Unfortunately as an ACT resident you can’t approach the NSWFTO however.
Re yr. comment about staffing levels: yeah, you’re right, some of them do wonders on the smell of an oily rag. For example, Film Central NSW has just one guy, he got up a fab website in just a few months.
maybe I could get some “development funding” for the film idea I had last week! For I have not only opinions, but I am a self declared auteur and an “industry professional” (I once made a short film). Yes, give the Govt office the ability to dispense development funds – I’d like to get me some of that!
Maybe the Govt could also fund some more short film festivals too!
So what does that say for the Govt Office, homebrewed – are you for or against it? Personally, I’m for it although I’d prefer it had the ability to dispense development funds (as do other such Offices around the country). You’ll find dozens of Aussie industry professionals making use of Govt development funding, as a way of ‘kickstarting’ their projects (which means they can go on to be self-sufficient).
screen industry professonalism… in canberra it often means hobbyists masquerading as professionals… you are a professional (as opposed to an artist) when you can make money without having government subsidise you…
maybe you should look at staffing levels of other film offices in regions of comparable size – most have max of 2 part time staff. think about it. ACT government overkill once again?
Presumably what we want is 5 days of screen industry professionalism – and then some.
rumour has it the manager of screenACT is a solicitor and former in-house counsel for a bank- sounds like the quality v quantity argument might come into play here… 3 days of professionalism v 5 days of plonking mediocrity
Interesting developments in this saga….the manager returns from maternity leave to work part-time; the other two continue as before. Simto may be right…

The person originally hired to run the Office left after 3 months. The replacement went on maternity leave after three months. She initiated the name change prior to her departure so people outside the ACT would identify the office as ACT based. Apparently she returns to work at the end of September. Hopefully things will gather pace when she returns.
According to the CT, the whole thing occurred at a “lavish launch”, JB.
