I forgot to take a picture of it – but I was just wondering what the massive pole on the corner of Chewings St and Southern Cross Drive is all about.
It is very intrusive as it overlooks most of Scullin and Florey.

Google are now trialling a new StreetView setup, with permanent cameras now being set up in several locations around Australia for a 12 month trial. People will be able to log into the network and monitor any street in the trial areas at any time – day or night.
Scullin and Waniassa are two of the trial areas in Canberra that I know of, but there may be more.
The cameras are located in a housing at the very top of the tower, and can be zoomed in to anywhere with 4km of the tower’s location. The cameras run off the new LTE mobile wireless network, and Telstra have been contracted to install and maintain them during the trial period.
Apparently the HD cameras are almost as good as anything installed in the USAF’s UAV and U2 fleets.
U2? Will the streets have no shame?

But I thought Google Maps and Street View was live already??
It’s no different to any mobile phone tower (by looks), connected to a street light, maybe 8m higher then an normal street light.
“It is very intrusive as it overlooks most of Scullin and Florey.” That’s one huge exaggeration.

It would have to be a bloody tall tower.

I saw a Telstra ute there like a week or two ago so it’s definitely something from Telstra and I’m pretty sure it’s a LTE (4G) transmission tower. Telstra stated a couple of months ago that by early next year most of Canberra would be getting LTE coverage.
Thats obvious and it pre-exists canberra in that sort of mapping. View
