Shade sail installation recommendations?

Our one was recently done by Just Rite. They have been very professional yet friendly and accommodating. They have made the process painless and enjoyable. I particularly liked that they had a designated customer representative. The end result was a shade cloth sail that exceeded my expectations and I consider the final cost to be reasonable. Being a Principal Building Surveyor and Licensed ACT Builder with 52 years experience in the industry I can tell you shade sales are not always exempt from approval.

Why do you have to get it done correctly now??

If you don’t want to do it right, if you want to do it “easy”, if you want to listen to slackers who prefer the cheap, “easy” way out go for it.

As a matter of interest relative to this topic: On 30 June 2004 when the old Building Act was rescinded ACT Building Control had a total of 8,300 non-approved, illegal structures detected in the ACT. About 35% of them were jobs constructed of kit rubbish from hardware and building suppliers and most owners failed to enquire of the Planning and Building authorities as to the formalities, legal and structural.

It cost them a lot of aggravation, mainly delays in transferring leases upon sale of the property and/or lost sales and it cost them a lot of money having to get shonky work rectified and penalties incorporated within Approval charges.

And to be honest they are as basic as they are simple. To spend thousands on a so called professional to install is ludicrous. That’s why they sell em at bunnings so that any Jo blo can install them.

Fairly simple if you’re installing stand-alone poles. Some problems can arise if you need a small pole out of a roof (substituting a roof tile etc). Attaching to a wall can cause some problems e.g. if it is high on the outside of a brick veneer and will put an outward force on the wall which is only strong in compression…

Hey churl, let’s not get carried away here. Most hardwares carry the roof extension poles and to be honest they just bolt onto the truss. Here’s one company that do it;

In terms of any requirement for an engineering analysis for outward for on a wall I would doubt that as well. And I dare say that shade sail companies don’t offer structural engineering services.

I would either youtube it, you will find a lot of instructional vids on there these days, or go down to bunnings, as they stock them now and look on the package at the instructions. There fairly simple with three poles, couple of rings and the sail. What’s actually wrong with it?

Get instructions from net forums and DIY. It will save you a lot of money.
