Short lived cash heist

ACT Policing has arrested a 25-year-old Hughes man after a theft in Fyshwick earlier this afternoon (Friday, January 6).

Around 1pm, the 58-year-old female victim was carrying a cashbag containing business takings on Maryborough St, when the bag was snatched from her grasp.

The offender ran from the area and was seen to enter a green Holden Commodore on Newcastle St, and then quickly drove away. A witness was able to obtain the registration details of the vehicle and provided this information to police.

A short time later, police located the vehicle parked at a house in Lynch Street, Garran where the alleged offender and a 23-year-old Lyons woman were located and taken into custody.

Police later executed a search at the house and located a sawn-off shotgun concealed in plastic piping buried in the back garden.

The 23-year-old woman has been released pending further investigations.

The man was conveyed to the ACT Watch House and is expected to face the ACT Magistrates Court tomorrow charged with theft. I’m aware of the vernacular, but I was trying to make the point (“words used advisedly”) that I regard people such as these as being equivalent to rats.

Good grief, what a moron. A triple moron:

1/ Risking gaol on account of – what? – maybe $4,000?

2/ Using a car registered in your own name to do it.

3/ Leading the police straight to your illegal arms cache.

They don’t sound like the brightest crims using their own car. The shotgun was probably on the kitchen table, and freaking out, they decided to bury it. Cops then notice the freshly turned soil and the spade leaning against the back door………

The cash snatch is bad enough, but the sawed off shotgun should really put these people in deep poo. There is the potential for weapons to be used, resulting in someone getting maimed or killed. And the fact that someone went to the effort of modifying it meant that it wasn’t just Grandpa’s old gun that they kept when he died or some other nonsense. This is evidence of deep criminality.

Thankfully, there’s also a lot of evidence of deep stupidity as well. Using your own car to commit a daylight blag, and then driving home with the heist doesn’t put these clowns into the criminal mastermind class.

It would be interesting to know how the cops found out about the gun. They wouldn’t normally just go to a random location in a back yard, start digging and come up with gun, so it sounds like one of the pair ratted (and I use that word advisedly) the other out.
