Simon doles out the environment grants

Environment Minister Simon Corbell has let it be known that he’s handing $166,000 to worthy sorts:

Mr Corbell announced the final list of 14 projects totalling $166,412 including:

— Catchment Wide Pest Species Mapping and Coordinated Control Program – Ginninderra Catchment Group. To provide quality data to the ACT Government to map weed and pest species. $5,875;

— Catchment Wide Pest Species Mapping and Coordinated Control Program – Southern ACT Catchment Group. To provide quality data to the ACT Government to map weed and pest species. $5,875;

— Catchment Wide Pest Species Mapping and Coordinated Control Program – Molonglo Catchment Group. To provide quality data to the ACT Government to map weed and pest species. $5,875;

— Erosion Control in the Aranda Snow Gums Reserve Phase 2 – Friends of Aranda Bushlands Inc. To reduce erosion and water stress on the Snow Gums along banks within the Aranda Snow Gums Reserve. $4,354;

— Trial Rehabilitation of Selected Areas of Namadgi National Park Having Regard to Traditional Land Management Practises – National Parks Association of ACT Inc with Gudgenby Bush Regeneration Group Inc. To rehabilitate and restore part of the Gudgenby Valley in Namadgi National Park, $4,427;

— Indian Myna Public Education Project – Canberra Indian Myna Action Group. To provide practical knowledge on reducing Indian Myna numbers through education materials on actions to reduce feeding, breeding and roosting opportunities supporting a humane trapping program. $5,400;

— Living with the Jerrabomberra Wetlands – SEE-Change Inc. To support ten volunteer work parties to address weeds and animal pests, together with two workshops about the wetlands to support the on-ground work. $7,342;

— Spotted Dove Public Education Project – Canberra Indian Myna Action Group. To raise community awareness about recent Spotted Dove incursions into the ACT and their potential to become a significant feral pest as well as a series of on-ground actions to limit their establishment. $3,400;

— Seeding Community Spirit – Greening Australia Capital Region. To establish and maintain intensive seed production systems for grassy understorey plants. $38,850;

— Camp Cottermouth Weed Control and Rehabilitation – Scout Association of Australia ACT Branch Inc. To control St John’s Wort, African Love Grass and Sweet Briar in the woodland areas of the Camp as well as rehabilitate a one hectare area. $11,004;

— Feathers, Flowers and Fur: Embracing the Bush Capital Experience – Greening Australia Capital Region. This project will facilitate 6 on-ground planting events in the Lower Cotter and Canberra Nature Park as well as plant propagation and nursery work, targeting the ACT multicultural community. $16,850;

— STEP Master Plan Stage 2 – Outdoor Education Space – Southern Tablelands Ecosystems Park Inc. To provide a simple education and training in techniques for maintaining and enhancing local Indigenous plant communities, including box-gum woodland associated with the National Arboretum. The project will include the construction of an outdoor education space. $9,900;

— African Love Grass Containment and Control in “Booroomba” and Upper Reaches of the Paddy’s River – Paddy’s River Landcare Group Inc. To control African Love Grass using specialised machinery and skilled labour followed by an annual monitoring and follow-up spraying. $39,880; and,

— Wildlife Corridor Restoration, Gundaroo Drive, Gungahlin – Ginninderra Catchment Group Inc. To decrease levels of highly invasive Cootamundra Wattle in the Ginninderra Creek Catchment by removal from the Gundaroo River corridor and adjoining native grassland. $7,380
