Speed Camera Vans MIA?

I’m sure I’m not imagining that these things have virtually disappeared from our roads.

Havn’t seen one for at least a week or 2.

Any hot goss on why they may have been pulled?

It isn’t. Very few do. Vast majority of modern speedos seem to read a fairly reliable 8 – 10% high. People with GPSs get to see this in action.
(yes, I know GPSs aren’t 100%, but they’re pretty good … and reliably better than the average speedo.)

Factor in whatever margin over the limit applies before an offence is triggered, and most people can go past a $peed camera whilst indicating plenty over the limit with (im)perfect safety.

When driving to Melbourne those highway speed check billboards have been pretty spot on with my GPS, and the GPS reads 110 while the speedo reads 119!

Maybe the Greed Camera van had the engine running so that the heater would work? Or maybe they need it running to operate the camera equipment?

Here is a Norwegian study re speedo errors on many different auto manufacturers which include tyre dimensions.

Stick your cruise control on 89 in an 80 zone, never been booked.
120 all the way down to Sydney, past cops with their radar guns, never been booked.

Only time I was ever booked was on Majura road – it’s 90 almost all the way along it, so I had my cruise control set to 99. Unfortunately there’s a short stretch of 80 as it approaches the Federal Highway and the van got me. The speed I was booked for was “90” exactly.

Speaking of which, why are (certain) roadwork sites vacant during the hols? I know of one where the electronic sign has been changed to say ‘Roadworkers have families too’ (Or something similar).
Does that mean in the school hols, they also get the two weeks off? They must have an awesome union!

The preceding ‘slide'(?) says something like “slow down for safety”… The implication being that road workers are not that keen on being hit by idiotic motorists who cannot give them the courtesy of slowing to a speed that virtually guarantees their survival should the unimaginable happen.

I’m guessing you are not seeing the workers because they are avoiding be an intrusion on peak driving hours on the main roads you commute.

Yeah, I checked the sign again yesterday and it must be related to slowing down – not their break for the hols.
However, they changed the sign to say that at the time when they are not working there. For the last 3+m they have been working there ~7am-5pm+ (i.e. incl Canberra ‘peak’ hours), and the last 2 weeks they haven’t. That just seems strange to me with so much work still to do on the site. Therefore my comment on planning rosters and scheduling work. My 2c….
