The driver who crashed a car into two schoolchildren as they were walking near St Edmund’s College has pleaded guilty to hitting them and leaving them with serious injuries.
Tayler Christian Hazell, aged in his early 30s, faced the ACT Magistrates Court over an audio-visual link on Wednesday (20 August) where he admitted driving a stolen car into the two students on 28 March 2025 while he was under the influence of drugs.
He also admitted stealing the Holden Commodore in NSW while a young child was still inside it earlier that same day, then driving it in a dangerous way into the Territory.
The specific details he pleaded guilty to were not immediately clear.
But he pleaded guilty to two counts of culpable driving causing grievous bodily harm, as well as single counts of taking a child by force while stealing a vehicle, dangerous driving, taking a vehicle without consent and driving a vehicle without consent.
After the crash, the two boys, aged 14 and 15 and both students at the college, were taken to Canberra Hospital, where they underwent surgery before their conditions stabilised.
Hazell, who is from Ballarat in Victoria, was arrested after the crash and indicated he would plead guilty last month.
He has not applied for bail and has remained in custody since his arrest.
On Wednesday, Special Magistrate Sean Richter remanded him in custody, committed him to the ACT Supreme Court and said the first mention would be on 27 August to begin organising the sentencing process.
