Police chased a stolen car from NSW to the ACT and back again before finally getting it to stop and allegedly finding a 16-year-old girl behind the wheel.
But she is not the only one in trouble, as police have also charged the five young passengers who were allegedly with her in the vehicle.
An NSW Police spokesperson alleged a four-wheel drive was stolen from an address in Canberra on 12 September.
Officers then tried to stop the car for random testing in Queanbeyan, NSW, at around 1:45 am on Monday (14 September).
When the driver allegedly failed to stop, police initiated a pursuit. The pursuit continued through the Queanbeyan CBD, the Kings Highway and into the ACT.
Police began chasing the car again when it reentered NSW. Officers successfully deployed road spikes on the Kings Highway, but the car continued into Bungendore before stopping on Bungendore Road.
The alleged driver and five passengers – identified by police as two 15-year-old boys, a 15-year-old girl and two 16-year-old boys – were all arrested.
The 16-year-old girl police alleged had been driving was handed five charges, including police pursuit, taking and driving a conveyance without consent, and being an unaccompanied learner driver. She was refused bail to appear before a children’s court on Monday.
The five other teenagers were charged with being carried in a conveyance without consent. They were granted bail to face Queanbeyan Local Court in October.
