In a headline I never dreamed I’d write NineMsn have a story on baseball legend Jose Canseco’s flirtation with playing baseball in Canberra and the home team’s rejection of the advance.
We’re talking about a man who had a role in The Simpsons FFS!

Since when was there an Australian baseball league? It’s a dying sport in it’s home country, and we’re a cricket nation. I don’t see this going all that far.
Dying? Hardly.
And for a cricket nation, we seem obsessed with making our cricket more and more like Baseball.
20/20 is poor man’s baseball. They could make it so much better by having designated hitters or 2 innings of 10 overs each.
As for the ABL, The Cavalry only need to win one game this weekend to make the finals and if results go their way they can still finish first for a home grand final series out at Narrabundah.
If you say so, but this thread is literally the first I’ve heard about the ABL and the Cavalry (our team, presumably?)
Where have you been hiding?

How much do you hear about the Canberra Comets?
I think the Cavalry are averaging about 1200 fans at each home game. I’m not saying it’s massive or anything but they get an alright attendance.

(Though they might be holding out for Honus Wagner, Cap Anson or Mordecai “Three Finger” Brown)

Shane Warne?
Jose is 48 years old and been retired for more than a decade. A better comparison would be Ian Healy.
Retired from the Major League but still playing. Baseball players often play well into their 40’s and no offence to the ABL, but it ain’t the majors.
Players from the steriod era played well into their 40s which was more of a rare occurance from other eras when the rigours of the game diminished their production. Canseco is a serial drug offender – spending time in jail in 2003 for steriod use. He is the poster boy of what a disaster the steriod era was for MLB and the Australian league would do well to run a mile from it (indeed, MLB now owns the Australian league and im sure would be none too plussed should some of the old steriod war horses be picked up down here less they gain further publicity).
Oh and he’s batting 194/310/250 in 84 plate appearances. I’d bet Ian Healy could bat that.

I think Ian Healy would still be a handy grade cricketer too.

Having been on The Simpsons doesnt stop him from being a drug cheat. Are drug cheats are the kind of people you want representing Canberra?
Yes, yes we are.
Agree with teddyhb. He was past it 10 years ago when he was on HGH. Having a bona fide drugs cheat as a way of getting publicity is not a good look for Australian Baseball. I’d rather Australia set itself up as a winter ball league destination and look to get some of the up and coming rookies.
