I’d love to open the Pendos room as a cafe/bar/live music place (think Tilleys except with good food & service & welcoming to all people). It’d be perfect, once refurbished. The whole centre at Weston is getting a facelift too, which would also help.

Not sure what that talk is about?
Anyway…..it’s gone! 🙁

seems to be lots to do in canberra??
I played for a 5th Div team (won’t say which – people I know read this) but am not happy, not challenged, not having fun. I have played 3rd Div previously so if you know anybody with a space to fill, tell ’em about the Duke.
Duke, our team fits the bill (3rd div Southern Cross Pirates), but unfortunately we’re full up for next season at the moment. :/ I’ll let you know if anything changes.
Who did you play for last season?

Peterh/Duke, are you guys ACTEBA players?
nope. played years ago with a team as a rope in – they lost a player, but never really have the time these days.
Yup, and looking for a 3rd or 4th division team to play in this season, preferably a south side one.

oh no, Pendos is closing !?
just spoke to rob – no-one goes there = closing down.
BTW, it is his birthday today, if you want a chance to see him, tonight would be a good chance…
don’t know the final close date, but it sounds soon.
And I suspect The Venue is next. Two years ago (pre-Venue) you couldn’t get a table in that place on a Wednesday night (comp night) but last Wednesday it was deserted except for two teams and some bored bar staff.
And yet that pool pub in Braddon is always busy. Not sure why this is. Pendos will be missed, at least by people in the 8-ball comp.
maybe, if we knew earlier that rob was under financial burden, we could have organised some other friendly comps.
snooker for me, used to win beers at the labor club on a regular basis…

Aha, let me explain the verb ‘to heckle’, Granny. It can be done in a nasty way (typically to comedians) or it can be good-naturedly and can actually be a boon to the performer.
As an MC, I LOOOOOVE hecklers (within reason). They give you material and a board to spring off. An MC’s worst enemy is silence, no our TWO worst enemies are silence and crickets, our THREE worst enemies are surprise, fear and an almost fanatical devotion to the Pope.
Sorry, I went all Monty Python there. Good morning peterh if you’re lurking. (Like you lurk!!)
So I was just throwing in the odd observation and request between the few songs I was therefore, but it was all good and there was a lot of love in the room. (Mrs Thumper was there so there wasn’t that sort of love…)
I was just leaving.
oh I lurk.
I love to lurk.
just knocked a bit by the closure of pendos.
will have to make an effort to go down there tonight – wish rob a happy birthday.

therefore = there for
It’s started early…. (about 3.30am, from memory).

See you (and any others) there, Thumper.
Actually, when I was trying to get your attention last night with some heckle or other, I realised I was yodelling out ‘Thumper! Thumper!’ until I caught myself and turned to Locq and said, ‘Whoops. Protocol breach. Bugger, forgotten his name….. Oh, yeah. [First name], [insert heckle here]’.
Any live venue disappearing is cause for pause and mourning. Weeks like this (Filthy’s on Tuesday, the church at St Benedict’s as a surprising live venue/recording studio, the Front tonight — er, last night — and who knows where tonight — maybe to the Soul) just show how important it is to have the grungy little venue with eclectic crowds and someone doing MC stuff and passing the collection plate around and handing out raffle tickets that double as drink vouchers for the talent and damn ######## fine music.
And different venues.
Two nights ago, The Feldons (feat. Thumper) blasted our ear drums off with a rocking version of ‘Down On Love’. Last night (at my request) they did a more mellow yet electric version of same (though I did quite publicly set them homework to come back with a swing version — Mark the guitarist just needs to get a bit more Lounge Lizard sleaze going first).
Bob love live music in this town of villages. Switch off the plasma, my friends, and dive in.

So Phillip is heading down the Belconnen path to wowserism.
I blame Kevin Rudd for his anti binge drinking stance.
Seriously though, not a good thing..
Belco still has a few places, but not as many as the old days. I blame drink driving laws (but I’m not suggesting we remove them).
Slightly off topic, but not really, Pendos/Coolabah Pool room in Weston closes its doors this week too. Another Woden Valley dive bites the dust……Statesman Hotel holds on by a thread.

Thumper – I believe it is being turned into a car shop, nothing to do with wowserism!
Its been a long and distinguished history for the Texas Tavern/Henry Grattan/O’Sheas and upstairs – Phillip Amusements, Kitty O’Sheas and the GreenRoom…
Did I miss any other names?
crap.
now I will have to go to (gasp!) the kambah tavern or the burns club.
oh, well, at least the stagger home will be shorter.
O’Sheas is shutting down as well – I was told it was being redeveloped into something that is not a pub.
The last pub in the Phillip industrial area is gone. It will be a sad day for the tradies who want a beer after work…
